3 hour tour day - Dec. 13th 2008 **** Cancelled

The year is almost up, I suppose I should actually gin up some activities. While I can do a ham cram or some other non-flying activity, or an activity at our home site, in this case I am thinking about a road trip. Here's the problem with road trips: who wants to go anywhere in the Spring and Fall seasons, when it likely will be best at home?

But, December is another story.

December 13th, I invite everyone to join me in a day of chasing the wind. I'll call this a "Three Hour Tour," not because we'll only be gone a few hours (try all day), but because the radius of the chase will be 3 hours. That basically takes us up to Santa Barbara or down to San Diego.

Here are my preliminary plans:

1. Meet at the AJ LZ at 8:00 AM
2. Call the destination (early contenders here, suggestions?)
- Alternator / Alternator LZ / Beach in Santa Barbara
- Black Mountain in San Diego
- Other sites broken out by wind direction (North sites/South sites/etc)
3. Depart by 8:15 AM
4. Walk the LZ, leave retrieve cars
5. Fly short or fly long for those who want to go XC
6. Collect the strays and meet at a joint for dinner on the way home.
7. Get home kinda late and, hopefully, happy.

Some guidelines
- Let's be punctual on the departure. The last thing I want to be in is a hurry. How to avoid that? Leave early.
- Everyone should have a radio and have flown with it in the previous month. It's not a deal killer, just highly recommended.
- The primary goal is to fly safely. A close second is to have fun.

This trip is aimed at mid-level intermediate pilots who need more sites for their next rating. That's why some of us got all over California in the last year. Based on my experience, I encourage h2s/p2s and freshly minted h3s/p3s to come along with the idea of being drivers to check out the sites and learn from the experiences the other pilots have that day. That's a little lesson I came up with based on my own trip to a new site this weekend.

Please respond with thoughts, suggestions, etc.

The sites, the weather, the gear...

Here's the tentative site list:
- San Diego's Horse Canyon
-- They are having their Christmas fly in

--Horse Canyon Launch 32.774267, -116.476596 4566 ft
--Andersons Right LZ 32.763936, -116.48730 3286ft
--Andersons Left LZ 32.763936, -116487340 3286ft

-- Go XC back South and we'll grab you on the way home
-- Alternator 34.501366 -119.727781 3768 ft

-- SS hang gliders may have a hard time reaching the LZ

Please get your radio gear out and fly a flight with it before you go so we can be on radio. When Dave, Mike, Mike and I went to Santa Barbara last year, radios would have been a big help.

This is a H3/P3 trip. While we may fly sites that are H2/P2 or unrated, I will not take into account H2/P2 skills in picking the site (and it may not be one of the above). I'd encourage less experienced pilots to come along as drivers/observers. As I learned at Blackhawk, there's a lot to be gained in that role vs. pushing it and flying when you don't have the experience or gear for a site.

After getting a nice, early start at 8:15, I am hoping we will get a good flight or two in whereever we go. My car will be stopping at a good (not fancy but not fast food) restaurant on the way home and I hope that it won't be the only one in the parking lot. Hopefully, we'll have a lot of fun stories to swap.

Yeah

JW,

Sounds like a workable plan and I will make every effort to be there.

Horse Canyon Holiday Fly-In 12/13/08

See announcement post on our events page.

I'll Go

Haven't flown a new site in a while.

I'm Game Too

Either direction works for me.

Plan D:

Bates Beach is now on the list, thanks to winds forecast in the high teens and lots of low moisture.

May need some yoda-esque forecasting help from Southside on this one.

I hope to be there, but will

I hope to be there, but will not know untill tomorrow (friday) evening. Missed Elsinore Fly-in due to family obligations, Damnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn!
If I'm in the LZ Saturday morning, I'm in.

John, thanks for putting this on.

Gary

Weather

The weather as it stands is not good. Please keep an eye on the forums for go/no go.

Wave off

The weather shows strong winds and low clouds North and South of us.

Safety Sam says no fly Saturday.

The three hour tour is postponed indefinitely.

Horse Canyon next week for the fly in is recommended if flyable, but won't be part of this.
