Crestline Soaring Society

Head to Head XC Compitition. (Owen and I were the only HG's Sunday) Task: Billboard, Strawberry, Sugarpine, Billboard, Strawberry(SB). Launched Crestline around 2:00. Headed to BB up to 5600. Owen headed out in front across HWY 18. I stayed behind to get a bit higher. Shared a boomer with Steven at the gap. Had to stop a couple of times on my way to SB to fuel up which paid off. Owen was short when arriving to SB and continued to sink out to around 4100. He headed toward Arrowhead peak and ultimately had a great save/comeback after 40 minutes of scratching. I tagged SB and headed West to BB, Pine, and Sugarpine. Met up with Owen at Pine and shared a nice thermal. He headed West to tag Sugarpine, I headed East to continue to BB and SB. Owen caught up to me (dammit) just West of SB. He snagged a good one, and took the day. I dorked around with light lift/ zero sink before finding one that would get me back to SB to complete the task. Our plan was to continue East but I was only maintianing a few hundred over the road and didn't want to push my luck. I headed back to Marshal; Owen continued to Santa's Village.

I'm looking at SUVs in the 6000+ GVW range, and I've done my time with American made cars (the Quest was actually a Mercury villager), so I'm thinking Pathfinder/Armada/Sequoia.

Opinions about 4wd are welcome. I know the bit "it gets you 100 feet further before you get stuck." I was just wondering if, aside from Blackhawk, what So Cal/Southwest sites need 4WD?

Also, opinions about other vehicles welcome.
