Be the CSS Activities Director in '10I would like to invite someone who likes to throw parties to take my place as Activities Director. I can't imagine a club full of nicer people, more fun to volunteer for, than the Crestline Soaring Society. We've got a great core of cornerstone members who really help, in official and unofficial capacities, the place run well. Ken Howells has been handling the website and windtalker and Simba and other IT issues forever... the longest standing board member. Alan has put in many years, including this last very important one, as the calm and dignified President of our club. Mike Blakely, the ever-helpful Mike Zeller, Megret and Dianne are fantastic in their roles as Treasurer, VP, Secretary, and Site Coordinator, respectvely. I have really enjoyed being on the board and working with these great peeps. Rob, Owen, Dan, Dusty and Kathy, Mark Hoffman, Brent... and so many others do so much in unofficial ways to help, like cutting the grass, getting storage containers, welding shelves in them, cleaning up, helping with the sprinklers, providing the site with water and wifi, the list is almost limitless. Sadly, I have to forego being activities director next year. I love doing it and have a lot of fun with the boys and girls at our fly ins, on our trips, and at the club meetings. However, I have moved even further away from the hill and my personal and professional lives need attention in ways that preclude my official participation in club matters. Activities director is a role that needs no flying experience and it's a great way to get to know more people, so don't feel like you can't do it, just because you're new. I was a fresh Hang 3 when I took it two years ago and my impetus for many of the trips I planned was to get flying sites for my hang 4. Mission accomplished, I have flown quite a few with a lot of fun pilots. The only two solid responsibilities you would have are the two fly ins. Dianne did most of them for me, but that's outside of her job as site coordinator. This last time, I leaned heavily on helpers and took copious notes for him or her who follows me, so you won't be overburdened, trust me. One of the funnest flights I had all summer was at the last fly in... not feeling like I needed to stay up all that long, I flew for 45 minutes and then stuffed the bar on my U2 from Crestline, past the gaggle at Marshall, and over the LZ, for my longest, fastest speedrun... it was a great break to the day and made the rest of the event even more fun. Other responsibilities of the position are to plan trips and attend meetings, both of which are somewhat optional, in the sense that you don't *have* to do them, but you probably should. The meetings are easy and are scheduled after the flying day is over. The trips... well you can even call them without even going, which is what I did with Mingus this year. I didn't even plan the Yosemite trip. It's easy to plan trips to Dunlap, Big Sur, or other sites... pilots are easy to please, they are there for the air. There's a solid core of people to help with the fly ins and plan the trips, the club just needs a coordinator, a big picture person. I'd love to see a P3 in the position. The board needs more paraglider pilots to represent the interests of over half the club's membership, and I think activities director is a perfect spot for someone fairly new to the club. Of course, I will do all I can to help. I am biased, but I think it's the funnest job on the board. Sites > AJ Airpark News > Club Biz |
