CSS Events

We have a few events each year - big fly-ins in July and September, often a Halloween event, the Christmas toy drive, and occasionally a smaller event in there somewhere.

See the links below for info on upcoming events and to see items about past events, including photos, contest results, pilot reports from the day - whatever pertains.

If you have ideas or want to help out with an upcoming event, feel free to post comments on the event pages, add a child page(s) to them, or you can post topics in the Events & Site Projects section of the forum.

CSS Aerobatics Competition June 5th, 2010!

Dear friends, This June 5th, Crestline Soaring Society is hosting the CSS/SoCal Regional Hang Glider Aerobatics Competition in conjunction with our Presidential Citation Celebration BBQ for Owen Morse. I would like to invite you to participate! The competition will be held on the afternoon of the BBQ. It’s FREE to enter! However, participants are required to purchase a smoke bomb (at approximately our cost) for $10. This event is a one-run event. Best performance wins. There is an Open Class and a Sportsman Class. The Sportsman Class is for first time aerobatic competitors, and beautiful hand-blown glass trophies (created by world-renowned glass artist and our USHPA President Lisa Tate) will be awarded to the winners of both classes! Everyone - even single-surface pilots! - are encouraged to participate. Aerobatics competitions help promote the sport of hang gliding in a good light to new and younger audiences! So come out and wang it up! If you’re interested in competing, please email me at rod@rodclark.com right away! Advance registration will help us secure the appropriate number of smoke bombs and shuttles to launch! Also, I can provide aerobatics rules and regulations via email to anyone interested in competing so you can maximize your score during your performance. Come fly! Come celebrate! Come BBQ! Come Wang!

2008 CSS Toy Drive Saturday, Dec. 20th

We're having our annual toy drive on Saturday December 20. We collect unwrapped toys for all ages and add them to the nearby fire station's toy gathering efforts. The firefighters bring a truck out to the LZ and we get to interact in a non-emergency situation. We haven't seen them much this year, which is a good thing!

Club funds will be used, as usual, to purchase a cart or two of toys beforehand, so if you'd like to donate to that effort in advance, please do. You can leave a donation in the site drop box in a day-use envelope (write 'toy drive' on the envelope),with any CSS officer
or send a check (soon) to:

Crestline Soaring Society
P.O. Box 9052
San Bernardino, CA 92427

Flyable or not, there will be pilots, snacks and beverages in the LZ all afternoon. See you there!

3 hour tour day - Dec. 13th 2008 **** Cancelled

Originally Posted 2008-09-15 07:30
The year is almost up, I suppose I should actually gin up some activities. While I can do a ham cram or some other non-flying activity, or an activity at our home site, in this case I am thinking about a road trip. Here's the problem with road trips: who wants to go anywhere in the Spring and Fall seasons, when it likely will be best at home? But, December is another story. December 13th, I invite everyone to join me in a day of chasing the wind. I'll call this a "Three Hour Tour," not because we'll only be gone a few hours (try all day), but because the radius of the chase will be 3 hours. That basically takes us up to Santa Barbara or down to San Diego. Here are my preliminary plans: 1. Meet at the AJ LZ at 8:00 AM 2. Call the destination (early contenders here, suggestions?) - Alternator / Alternator LZ / Beach in Santa Barbara - Black Mountain in San Diego - Other sites broken out by wind direction (North sites/South sites/etc) 3. Depart by 8:15 AM 4. Walk the LZ, leave retrieve cars 5. Fly short or fly long for those who want to go XC 6. Collect the strays and meet at a joint for dinner on the way home. 7. Get home kinda late and, hopefully, happy. Some guidelines - Let's be punctual on the departure. The last thing I want to be in is a hurry. How to avoid that? Leave early. - Everyone should have a radio and have flown with it in the previous month. It's not a deal killer, just highly recommended. - The primary goal is to fly safely. A close second is to have fun. This trip is aimed at mid-level intermediate pilots who need more sites for their next rating. That's why some of us got all over California in the last year. Based on my experience, I encourage h2s/p2s and freshly minted h3s/p3s to come along with the idea of being drivers to check out the sites and learn from the experiences the other pilots have that day. That's a little lesson I came up with based on my own trip to a new site this weekend. Please respond with thoughts, suggestions, etc.

Andy Jackson/Rob Kells Memorial Fly-In

Andy Jackson 8/15/1937 – 9/5/1985

Rob Kells 9/7/1955 – 8/9/2008

Andy founded the original Pinecrest Airpark here in San Bernardino. Rob was President and an owner of Wills Wing, Inc. Both men dedicated their lives to hang gliding and free flight in general, and we lost both to prostate cancer.

Come out to fly and honor their memory

Buncha landings and some fun aero in these vids... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Na5PK_nRLF0 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xN-87bRKE4E http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_WeHuaNZJVo http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3wuRYSnt6Ec I avoided embedding the videos because it's better to go to youtube and click on the "watch in high quality" links. Not bothering with music. Some links I edited out the sound because I was talking about my need for viagra & propecia, or something. Got hard to vid the acro due to dwindling light.

Fly-In Parking

Rob McKenzie is going to be parking meister. No doubt there will be a good chance that you will be parked a long way from the lawn. The plan is to have a small area in the NW corner that will be a temporary loading zone. The zone will be inside the railroad tie fence, adjacent the lawn, and marked with some cones. So at the end of the day when you want to load wing(s) onto your vehicle, usage will probably go something like.... 1. Have your gliders folded and ready on the lawn at the loading zone. 2. When the zone is clear of vehicles, drive your vehicle up and you will have 3 (three) minutes to load your wings. 3. Drive back into the parking lot to find a place to park. 4. Continue socializing at the LZ.

Memorial Fly In Pics and Vids

Dianne throws a mean party and yesterday was a great memorial to the lives of two men who gave so much to our enjoyment of an amazing support. I'll be collating the landings and what I could get of the missing man and loop formations in a bit, but for now, here are some pics to start. I'd really like to see as many as possible from others. (My pics pop to bigger ones). Rob McK, you make a mean parking czar... Rob Van Z, thanks so much for the incredible sound system and putting so much effort into making sure all were entertained, which we were.

Memorial Fly in Report

This year's Memorial Fly-in was special in so many ways. There was great flying, a record crowd and I set a new personal best for distance flown. A few days ago I decided on a goal for myself on the next big air day. Rim of the World High School to the east, and the last peak west into the Cajon pass. I have been into the pass before, but never that far east. I made my goal on this flight. We (John Wright, RebarDan, Kyle and myself) arrived at launch around 12. The forecast was favorable, but we all wanted to get off the hill early, before the inversion set in. We were the first 4 HG pilots on launch and were in the air just as the next group was arriving. It was nice to set up and launch early to avoid the crowd on launch later: [img_assist|nid=1589|title=Crestline Launch - Memorial Fly in 08|desc=|link=node|align=left|width=100|height=65] We all launched a bit too early. The thermals were kind of weak and were not going very high. I would get to around 6000 at the billboard. I looked at pine a few times, but no one was getting up over there and I figured it would be flush city over there. So I spent about 30 minutes soaring over Crestline, waiting for the billboard to "turn-on." It did turn on. Rebar (on his ATOS) and I worked it together to about 6000 when Rebar gets on the radio: "Hey one more turn and I'm out of here" he said. Just like he said, he made one more turn and started east for the turn out. From my previous experiments with heading east I knew that I needed more than 6000 ft to get there. I stayed in the thermal with a PG pilot and we got up to about 7300, enough to get over the the turn out. I arrived there at about 6400 and jumped right in the thermal. As I was climbing through 7000, I again hear Rebar on the radio: "I'm at 9 thousand 9 hundred.... Oh I'll wait for ya." I thanked him but told him to just go on ahead. There was no way I was going to keep up with him on the ATOS. I got up to about 8300 and kept on going east. I tried to get to Strawberry Peak, but had to turn back. It wasn't long before I found another thermal. I got back up to 8000 and went east again. Soon I would find another thermal, this one got me to almost 10,000 ft just 1 mile west of Strawberry. I went to my east goal for the day, Rim of the World High School and got there with about 8500 ft to get back with. Got a cool picture of Lake Arrowhead: [img_assist|nid=1590|title=Lake Arrowhead|desc=|link=node|align=left|width=100|height=75] Getting back wasn't much of an issue. There were thermals popping off all over the ridge and not much head wind. I flew all the way back west to the billboard. I needed a 800 feet or so to get over to Pine flats and I got it. There was now a lot of traffic in the air and I had to keep my head on a swivel. I thermaled with a topless glider, a single surface, and a PG. I made it over to Pine and found the thermal right away. The last time I flew from Pine into the Cajon Pass I was at 9000 over Pine. All I got this day was 6800. Just as I was topping out in the thermal I heard an airplane engine that scared the shit out of me. I got an eye on it, a few thousand feet over me, heading north into the desert. It was a P-51 Mustang! How cool? Last week I got to share the sky with F-18s, today a P-51! Awesome! 6800 feet wouldn't be enough to get to the Cajon Pass and back, so I decided to just go as far west as I could and try to get lucky. Well I was lucky, found a thermal before I got to SugarPine that got me back over 7000. I kept on going west. I got 2 more thermals that kept me up around 7000 and I made my goal. Getting back was a bit scary. I was over the last peak before the 15 freeway at around 6800 ft. The last time I was over there I was at 8500. I remember that it took around 2000 ft to get back to Pine Flats, so at the rate I was going I would be back at Pine at about 4800, which would be plenty to thermal back up, or just head on out to the LZ. I was again lucky and found just enough lift on the way back to keep me on a comfortable glide and I arrived back at Pine with about 5500 ft. At this time I was 2 hours 30 minuted into the flight, was tired and out was water. I dove down to the LZ and landed before most of the traffic. [img_assist|nid=1591|title=Dave 9-06-08|desc=|link=node|align=left|width=55|height=100] A great time socializing in the LZ after flying. I haven't been around that many HG people since Wallaby. It was really great. Great Weekend Of Flying

What a lot of fun this past weekend. Flew at the Flyin/Memorial on Sat. Ran into pilots and X-pilots that I hadn't seen in years. Snagged a ride with Stan and his wife to Crestline(Thanks Again). After doing a little glider maintenance launched around 1:30. Climbed about 1000 over and decided to cross over to Pine. No one there yet, so couldn't tell if it was working or not. Once there didn't find much and turned back for Crestline. Serious sink crossing back. Aborted and headed for Regionals. Got there low and began looking for a saving thermal. Found one about 200 below top of the ridge. Stuck with it for about 15 mins drifting towards Marshall. It really turned on behind marshall and I was able to core it up to about 5000. Crossed back to Crestline with only minimal loss. Not enough altitude to soar crestline, so I sprinted over to Billboard again and saw Mark fighting to core something. As I got nearer my vario began to squeal and I climbed above billboard. Saw gliders about 2000 above me and wondered how"d they get there. All of a sudden my Ultrasport pitched up and began seeking what the other wings had already experienced. Unfortunately I had a PG in the thermal with me and we were both rocketing up. Because lift was so strong and I feared being pitched into him even though he was flying appropriately I pulled out. Couple of turns and he was at approx 8000. I had bailed at 6600. Not long afterwards found another boomer and was able to climb up with them at about 7400. Decided I'd had my fill of this wonderful air and started across to Marshall again. In the middle of the valley pulled along side Dusty in his Falcon. We waved and flew alongside each other for couple of mins. I then pulled the control bar to my waist and streaked over to Marshall. Got there at about a 1000 over and watched many PG's and HG's working the scratchy lift. Flew over to the east towers without losing much altitude. 2hrs into the flight forgot my gum and mouth was glued shut. Looked at the LZ and it was relatively clear, so decided now was a good time to begin socializing. Flew into the pattern unmolested and dove for the trees/ranchhouse. Once at tree level reversed and came around into the wind. Nailed the spot landing. Absolutely on top of the center mark, only there was no contest. (Figures). Thanks to Rob and Di, and all those that assisted in making this a memorable event. (Food was great, cold drinks were even better)

THANKS TO DINO!!!

Thanks to Dino for his tireless efforts and enthusiasm in putting together an historic aerobatics display in honor of Rob Kells and all other inhabitants of the celestial bird farm! At approximately 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, September 6, 2008 at Andy Jackson Airpark, Dino Dinaso, John Heiney, Bill Soderquist, Dave Biddle, and Erik Delf (Mitch would have been there, but he wasn't able to get back up to launch in time) all participated in the world's first simultaneous, smoke-trailed, five-man loop! It was spectacular and Rob, I'm sure, was joyous! Congratulations to all! YOU MADE HISTORY!!! CAN'T WAIT TO SEE THE VID!

Rob Kells Memorial Church Service (Location Changed)

Location Changed - The morning church service will now be at a different facility, near the originally announced location. See the link below. We have decided, with Juanita Jackson's blessing, to honor Rob Kells at this year's Andy Jackson Memorial Fly-In, Saturday September 6, 2008. Trish Kells has planned a church service for Rob that morning and all are invited to attend the church service or come to the fly-in, or both. Please see the announcement on the Wills Wing website for details. Crestline/Marshall was Rob's home flying site and for many years he made nearly weekly trips out here to test fly WW hang gliders (and Swing paragliders up until a few years ago) when the Santa Ana winds weren't blowing. Rob's birthday would have been September 7, and Andy Jackson was taken by prostate cancer too, so the timing and location couldn't be more perfect for celebrating Rob's life and contributions to the sports we love. T-Shirt Artwork for July 12th Fly-In

The first Fly-In of the summer is scheduled for July 8, 2008, and we'd like to make t-shirts for it, since we haven't done a club shirt in a while. None of the CSS Board members are artistically inclined, so we're counting on members or interested parties to come up with a design in time for us to get the shirts printed and ready for the fly-in. So please brainstorm and draw using whatever tools you like and come up with something soon. We'd like to have the artwork by the first week of June Please email your designs or sketches to a board member (activities@crestlinesoaring.org) or post them on the forum in the events section. If anyone feels especially motivated and wants to handle the whole t-shirt production process, feel free to speak up!

CSS Toy Drive 2007

We'll be having our annual toy drive on Saturday, Dec. 22, 2007 in the AJ Airpark LZ from 2-4 PM. Collected toys will be added to the local fire station's toy collection efforts for them to distribute to the community.

We'll provide holiday beverages and cookies and other goodies from 2 to 4. If it's a flyable day, we'll be flying. If not, we'll just pile up the toys and take a picture. Weather permitting, the firemen may come out to pick up the toys.

Due to Santa Ana winds, we'll have the toys collected at the LZ from 2PM to 4PM and then at 4 we'll shuttle the toys over to the local fire station on Kendall Drive.

The club will be making a cash donation, as usual, and Di, Kathy, and whomever else want to help will be using it to purchase a variety of toys beforehand. If you don't have time or inclination to get a toy and bring it to the LZ on the 22nd, you're welcome to make a donation (in the LZ drop-box is fine - mark the envelope 'Toy Drive') between now and then.

The toys go through the fire department to local underprivileged youth to help brighten their holiday season and are a way for us to keep a connection to the local first responders whose help we need from time to time.

HAM Class 2007 Planning Notes

This page will track the progress of the planning for the HAM Training 2007 by the CSS. This is a work in progress, and will get updated as things progress. Those looking to help out can pick any item that clearly needs doing, or email Pete (peter@peterjohanson.com) and ask how to help out. Details below:

  • Date/Time:
The current candidate days are either June 16th, or June 23rd.

5/8/07: The Days Inn on University has space on June 30th for 20 people for $250, so that adds June 30th to the candidate date list.

5/10/07: Jeff will be getting me a list of weekends Moe is available, we will probably have to go from there. Jeff suggested that we do the one day training such that there is a test being administered (they have several members qualified to administer the test) a week later, to give people time to study.

  • Location:
I (Pete) called CSUSB Library looking to see if they had space we could use and they simply forwarded me on to the university Events department, who told me they'd have to charge us, and charge us extra since the university is closed those days. Lame. Anyone have a contact at CSUSB that might be able to actually help us out?

I've left a message for Mary from (http://www.san-bernardino.org/) to see if they might be able to help us out, waiting to hear back from her.

Other ideas people have suggested include any nearby churches (will this turn people off to coming maybe?) or just do it at the LZ.

5/8/07: In the forums, Bob suggested we try the Days Inn on University, and Alan called them and they have a room for 20 available on June 30th for $250. Seems very doable. Once we get set on the instructor, how much they want for the training, etc., we can try to figure out what pricing would be like if we used this room. Does CSS want to foot part of the cost for CSS members attending, or should each attendee pay enough to pay instructor + room?

5/10/07: After meeting with Jeff, the C-Bar-C president, he informed me that they have space we could use for free, if they're doing the training. The only downside is that it is in Highland, about 15 minutes drive from the LZ, in the Patton Hospital complex.

  • Instructor:
I sent an email to Moe, the training director for The Citrus Belt Amateur Radio Club (http://www.w6jbt.org/) to see if he had anyone that would want to do the class, but not heard back from him. I'm going to forward the email to their president if I don't hear back from him by the end of the day today (5/3/07). Anyone know anyone personally that might teach this?

5/4/07: I forwarded my original email to Moe to Jeff, the C-Bar-C President, in the hopes that he will respond.

5/8/07: I've been in contact with Jeff, and am going to their weekly meeting tomorrow to try to discuss details of doing a class on June 30th. Will update with results after the meeting.

5/10/07: I had a good meeting with Jeff last night, and I definitely think they'll be able to set something up for us. Moe is currently traveling, but Jeff is going to get in touch with him, explain what's up, and try to find weekends in the next few months that would work.

HAM training day(s) planning

On a recent flying day at Soboba, I mentioned to Alan Crouse that I really needed to stop slacking and get my HAM radio technician license so I could operate (legally) a radio while flying. Alan replied (I paraphrase), "A HAM radio training day at Marshall sounds exactly like something a new activities coordinator would put together!" So there we have it, looks like I've got a new task! The current vague outline is either a one day training, or two days of training, either the same weekend, or spread over two weekends. Spread over two weekends would give people time to study up what they learned, before taking the test the next weekend. Ideally, by the end of the training day(s), folks would walk away licensed HAM radio technicians, ready to add their words of wisdom to the AJ Airpark airwaves. I've gotten a suggestion to call the folks over at Windsports to see how they run their HAM day, I'll be doing that shortly. Thoughts? Is there interest in something like this? Suggestions from folks that have participated in something like this? Please post comments here, or email me (peter at peterjohanson dot com) I've added a page to track the planning of the HAM class, please feel free to edit that, or make comments with suggestions. I will keep updating that with more details as the planning continues: http://www.crestlinesoaring.org/ham_class_2007_planning_notes

AJ Airpark 13th Anniversary: July 14, 2007

This year's Summer opener was a real blast!

While conditions were soarable but not spectacular, everyone got their fill of airtime and BBQ at the Airpark 13th Anniversary Fly-In.

The skies over Marshall were filled with gliders all afternoon - at times there were 20 or more stretched from Last Chance to the Radio Tower. The spot landing contests provided a lot if interesting landings (and no tubage!) and the glide contests were a big hit, providing something to watch while eating and drinking and socializing in the LZ. A number of contestants signed up AFTER the contest had started, because it looked like fun and they were able to just go to the top of the training hill to compete. We'll have more of this type of contest in the future, we're sure. Results will be posted here soon.

The food was provided by Double D's BBQ again this year, and it was a big hit again, with teriyaki chicken, hot links, burgers, corn and potato salad, etc. and vegetarian fare as well.

The SB Sun newspaper sent out a photographer and reporter to cover the event, and we made the front page of the Local section on Sunday's paper, with a great little article and a couple of big pictures.

2007 Glide Contest Rules

2007 Glide Contest Rules

Where applicable, the rules apply to both the PG and HG glide contests. In the case of any dispute concerning these rules, the Activities Coordinate has final say. If you don't like it, go run your own glide contest.

  • Pilot Safety - Safety is our #1 priority. Pilots determined to be taking unsafe actions as part of the contest will be disqualified. This will be determined by the Activities Coordinator, and will not be debated. Unsafe actions include, but are not limited to, cutting off other pilots on final and ignoring the established landing patterns for the site (available on crestlinesoaring.org or at the LZ).
  • Objective - To glide the farthest from the launch point. Each pilots will have 2 attempts at a longest flight.
  • Entry Fee - There is an entry fee of $5 for each pilot entering the glide contest. 1/2 of all the proceeds from the contest will go to the CSS, and the remaining 1/2 is rewarded to the 1st place pilot.
  • When - The contest is from 17:00 and 19:00. Pilots wishing to compete must be registered by 16:45. Only 20 pilots for each type of glider will be accepted, in order to give each pilot enough time to do their 2 flights.
  • Wings -In order to give us time to run the contest, and to level the playing field a bit, HG pilots will have be able to choose between 3 different size Falcons that will be provided by Rob McKenzie. PG pilots will be able to use their wing of choice.
  • Launch - HG pilots will be launching from the new training hill at the northeast corner of the LZ, and PG pilots will be launching from the 50' hill at the southwest corner of the LZ. If I pilot is determined by the judge not to have launched at all, and merely run down the hill, the run will not be eligible to win the contest.
  • Landing - The landing point is the first point of contact a pilots makes with the ground after launching. All landings must be "clean." For HG pilots, this means the pilot must remain standing, and the basetube, leading edge, and nose must not touch the ground. (rear of keel and wingtips are ok to contact the ground). For PG pilots, this means the pilot must remain standing, and neither the pilots knees, rear, or harness may touch the ground.
  • Prizes - 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place prizes will be awarded to the 3 pilots with the furthest flights. All winners will be awarded trophies, and the 1st place pilot will also be given 1/2 of the money gathered from the entry fees. The remaining 1/2 will go to the CSS.

2007 Spot Landing Contest Rules

2007 Spot Landing Contest Rules

Where applicable, the rules apply to both the PG and HG spot landing contests. In the case of any dispute concerning these rules, the Activities Coordinate has final say. If you don't like it, go run your own spot landing contest.

  • Objective - To land the closest to the spot for your wing type (hang glider landings at the paraglider spot, and vice versa, will not counted in the contest). The spot is defined as the middle point of the green circle, and will be marked with a cone in order to be perfectly visible.
  • Entry Fee - There is an entry fee of $5 for each pilot entering the spot landing contest. 1/2 of all the proceeds from the contest will go to the CSS, and the remaining 1/2 is rewarded to the 1st place pilot.
  • When - Landings occurring between 17:00 and 19:00 will be eligible to win. Pilots must be registered before their first eligible landing in order to compete. There is no limit on the number of landings a pilot can make in that time period.
  • Launch - Only landings of flights originating from outside of the LZ are eligible. Flights from the training hills at the LZ do *not* count (those from the 750 are eligible, however).
  • Landing - All landings must be "clean." For HG pilots, this means the pilot must remain standing, and the basetube, leading edge, and nose must not touch the ground. (rear of keel and wingtips are ok to contact the ground). For PG pilots, this means the pilot must remain standing, and neither the pilots knees, rear, or harness may touch the ground.
  • Spot - A pilot's landing run is the line connecting the first point of contact a pilot makes with the ground, and the last point of contact a pilot makes to stop their run. The spot for a given landing is defined as the point along the landing run that is furthest from the center of the circle. The spot for a landing where no steps are taken is counted at the first point of contact with the ground.
  • Prizes - 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place prizes will be awarded to the 3 pilots with the closest spot landings. All winners will be awarded trophies, and the 1st place pilot will also be given 1/2 of the money gathered from the entry fees. The remaining 1/2 will go to the CSS.

CSS Toy Drive, Saturday Dec. 16, 2006

We're having our annual toy drive on Saturday December 16. We collect unwrapped toys for all ages and add them to the nearby fire station's toy gathering efforts. The firefighters bring a truck out to the LZ and we get to interact in a non-emergency situation. We haven't seen them much this year, which is a good thing!

Flyable or not, there will be pilots, snacks and beverages in the LZ all afternoon. See you there!

9 September 2006 - Andy Jackson Memorial Fly-In

Mark your calendars

The annual Andy Jackson Memorial Fly-In is coming up Saturday, September 9, 2006 (the weekend after Labor Day).

We're gonna' wrap up the Summer with another great day of flying, Santa Ana winds permitting. We can usually count on the first weeks of September being flyable, but with the unusual weather we've had so far this season, who knows? Double D's BBQ will be cooking the grub again - burgers, dogs, and hot links this time. They did a great job at the Anniversary fly-in, so come hungry. Di says no raffle this time, but there'll be another fun contest and lots of music and pilots, friends and family.

More details to follow as the date approaches.

The Fly-In Was a Great Success!

Thanks to all who helped out and all who participated!

After Flight Chow-down: Great day of flying, and fun party at the L.Z. - Brian RicheyAfter Flight Chow-down: Great day of flying, and fun party at the L.Z. - Brian RicheyThe day had pretty darn good conditions, varying from booming mid-day to light mid-afternoon when the sun was behind an alto-strat layer for an hour, to very bouyant and glassy late in the day. We have some images from the day and links to pilot reports and contest results here. Post your thoughts on the day in the pilot reports or events sections of the forum - we'll add links here, and if you have images either post them to the Image Galleries or send them to , with caption and credit if you can, and we'll post them for you.

The BBQ was pretty good - we might have to have Double D's back again before the summer's out.

12th Annual Fly-In - Postscript

Well it’s mid-week and we’re probably about rested up from the 12th Annual Fly-In. Great flying, food, folks and fun. Almost 100 pilots were registered to fly and I’m sure a few others flew (anyone ever figure out who that late evening PG’er was who gave us the landing (out) demo :-) My bet is there were more than 150 pilots, family and friends attending. With tasty BBQ filling our bellies from Double D's BBQ, a good time was had by all. Thanks to our great sponsors, the event was also a money-maker for the club as we netted more than $1,100. Big ‘THANK YOU’ to Dianne. She worked and planned for the event for months in advance and it all came together on the big day. - Alan C.

Contest Results - Spot Landing, 12th Anniversary Fly-In

The first-place pilots in both categories did not participate in the cash side-pot, but the second-place pilots did.

Marshall to Beaumont - PG

During today's Fly-in, 3 of us went XC towards the Dam. Mark Kranz reached the Dam. Bob Barry reached Yucaipa then returned to the Dam. Flight info. After reaching Yucaipa I went to Beaumont, landing 9 km (5.6 miles) short of the Soboba LZ: Flight details. Max altitude of 2386m (7826'). Google Earth flight path. I re-launched around 5:30 and got enough height to glide back to Crestline for some smooth ridge soaring there. Then I chilled in the LZ with good food and fun people. What a great day.

Crestline, 8 July, 2006

Launched a T2 154 from Crestline about 14:50. Got up at Billboard and went to Pine, losing only 300' along the way. got up to 6500 north of the peak and pointed west, where there were several gliders strung out, including the Atos. Worked a couple of lighter ones for a few turns along the way, and established over Sugarpine at 6200, sinking slowly. A Kagel guy was about 700 below me and pressed on west. I didn't see him turning, and I was getting no beeps, so I headed out front and back to Pine. Up again and over to BB. Worked the ridge a bit with a crowd and followed the spine out to Marshall - caught a weak one over the 2N40/18 turnout and drifted with it to the 18/138 interchange, and from there to the next point east. Was at 6000 without a cycle in evidence, so I headed out the spine along the east side of Waterman Canyon, then west to the radio tower. Lots of shade from an island of cirrus under the sun at this time. Saw a truck arriving at Marshall dragging three PGs in bags from the tailgate - they'd done that from at least halfway in; from 4800 I couldn't tell WHAT was going on there. OUCH! Back to Marshall, then cloud and around and round. Thought about landing at 16:30, but decided to try and work the re-emering sunshine. At 16:45 got a solid 200-300 up core at Regionals and drifted slowly with it to Crestline. BB then back to Cloud and a low fast fly-by of Marshall. Kept full VG and dove to the LZ, where I whipped a couple of wingovers, a bit on the low side. [img_assist|nid=259|title=There's that VG cord...|desc=|link=node|align=left|width=100|height=95]Forgot to let the VG off!! I had earlier done the 'Inner Pilot' thing and clearly envisioned my contest-winning spot. Ahem. It seemed really bumpy on my downwind, but I was low and on a good track. Pulled in a little on final because I wasn't dropping fast enough. Shot past the spot, dropped a tip, and ran 3-4 steps before going to my bare knees and sliding a good 6 feet, coming to a stop around 17:10. The basetube wheels worked great. Kathy Rhodes dashed over with water, ointment, and bandages - thanks a bunch, Kathy! My rib dinner was great (the roll could have been fresher) and hangin' with the crowd was fun. I was zoning out during the raflle, so I bailed. Forgot my GPS in the truck, so no track.

Double D's BBQ Menu

The Double D's BBQ crew will be offering food from about 3-7 PM on Saturday, July 8, 2006.

Full dinners include a generous helping of meat, 2 sides of your choice, and 2 drink tickets.

  1. Rib & Chicken Dinner - $12
  2. Rib Dinner - $10
  3. Chicken Dinner - $8
  4. Hot Link Dinner - $7
  5. Kids Dinner - $6 (1 drink ticket)
  6. Sides:
    1. Potato Salad
    2. Baked Beans
    3. Corn on the Cob

A la Carte
  1. Hot Link Sandwich - $3
  2. Hot Dog - $2

Food item purchases will be directly from Double D's when you place your order, not during contest registration as we've done in the past.

Beverages will be served by the CSS. Additional beverage tickets are $1 each.

Contest Details

There will be a HG and PG spot landing contest at the party. Winner of each gets a prize, and we will have a cash side pot for anyone interested.

1. All pilots are entered, prize TBD.
2. There will be a money side pot for both PG and HG. $5.00 buy-in, sign up in LZ.
3. Multiple flights are OK.
4. Closest to the HG/PG cone wins.
5. Pilots must stay on their feet after landing.
6. PG: your spot is where your feet first touch.
7. HG: Must come to a stop with no exaggerated runs. Score is the furthest point from the cone of the entire run/stop. Example landing 20' before the spot and running 8' past = score of 20'. Landing 8' before the spot and running 20' past and score= 20'. Must stay on feet and no basetube or nose contact, wingtips and rear keel OK.
8. If the judge is busy measuring someone else and you need to clear the LZ, drop a glove or something unobtrusive for a marker.
9. Fly a safe pattern. Don’t cut anyone off.
10. Time window of contest is 4PM to 6:30PM. May be extended if too strong for PG.
11. Pilots must fly their respective landing patterns. Violating your half of the LZ on approach means disqualification.
12. Judge can be bribed (prefers imported beer).

Bruce Carr Update

Good News! Went to visit Bruce today at the Rehab Center found he had been discharged two weeks ago, so apparently he is with family for Christmas.

Elsinore, 29 Nov., 08 - Turkey Meet

Mild Santa Anas were forecast, N 10-15 with gusts to 20 (they'd been backing off the strengths for a couple of days. This was good for EHGA's Turkey Meet. In reality it was blowing in lightly ESE, clear and warm for November. Some wings got above the ridge to the left of Edwards for a few minutes. Most had extended sledders. I launched a Sport 2 155 just after 13:00 into lift and climbed, immediately left of launch, enough to do two passes over launch. Heading north at ridgetop height I hit sink, then mild turbulence a few times on the way out to the road-cut/point. A PG was working the N bowl around the corner and I got a bump way below him, but it wasn't big enough to circle in. A couple of bumps on the way out to the Lake Elsinore Marina LZ, but I didn't circle in them either. Got to the marina with good altitude and threw my bomb heading NW (about 20' from target in the middle of the LZ) and did a right-hand diving approach over the water to head in from the ESE, over a fisherman and a truck. The headwind was just a little more than I thought, so I landed on the outer circle (50'?) with my shoes in the edge of the big puddle. It didn't blow down until late, a bit before local sunset. A rigid wing did really well late in the day. About half of the paragliders made it to the LZ. A number of pilots, both HG and PG, didn't fly at all. Nobody landed in the water. Wolfie (Wolfgang Seiss, Austrian comp pilot) wowed them with his first landing, swooping in low for his bomb toss then screaming out over the water and dragging a toe in it on the way to a nice flare at the cone. His second landing was more spectacular, with a big long water spray, but he popped up approaching the cone and had to flare high, landing hard on his butt and snapping a tip wand. The crowd loved it. Wolfie got 3rd in the HG division. NMERider Jonathon was 2nd and Doggone Bill Soderquist took 1st. Gene Embry got 1st in the PG div and also got the overall trophy. Mickey ran a great meet and the burgers were good. I don't think there was any tubage. Fun to fly at Elsinore again, fun to land at the marina. We checked out Everyday Mike's LZ before heading up and while not ideal for HG it certainly looks doable. Only a couple of choices for landing direction and there's only about 30° difference between them. The area is sheltered, so landing crosswind and slightly uphill should work in most situations.

3rd Annual Soboba Fly-In

Paragliders, Hang Gliders, friends and family are invited to attend the 3rd Annual Soboba Fly-in scheduled for next Saturday 20 September 2008. We are expecting a large turnout for this fun event. A Press Enterprise reporter will be there to cover the story for the newspaper. Planned events include a barbeque and music. Everyone is invited. Get a free site checkout from any of our local flyers. No restrictions. Come anytime, the gate will be open all day. Best flying times are usually 4:00pm till dark. Soboba Work Party and BBQ Dec 1st & 2nd

A message from Darrel posted on the Soboba Soaring forum: Soboba final cleanup Dec 1-2 Kevin and Roger have come to an agreement about the trash. Kevin is to pay Roger a sum of money after the sale of his mobile home. When that money is available it will be used to hire people and equipment to remove the trash. I have talked to both Kevin and Roger and they both agree that anything on the property that we can use is now ours. That includes the large trailer. Roger said we can sell it and take the money for the clean up. It's value is about $1500. There is also lots of usable lumber. So before the bulldozers can come in and chop everything up we need to separate the stuff. Steel barrels, Plastic barrels, Wire spools, Paint cans, Pipe, in their separate piles. We will stack all of this behind the little hills next to the mountain that hide it from the public view. There is a lot of trash and this will be a big undertaking for the Soboba Flyers. But I believe it could be accomplished in one weekend if we could rally enough troops. So mark it on your calendars, Sat and Sun Dec 1, 2 for the work party. Come for a hour, half day of both days but please come. There will be food and drinks and maybe even some evening flying. What to bring if you have them: 1. Sledge hammers 2. Wreaking bars. 3. Dolly might be handy 4. Gloves 5. Truck or trailer for hauling 6. Chain or rope for dragging 7. Wire cutters 8. Powered screwdrivers 9. Cutting torch Roger is planning to be there. Maybe we can get some answers to the future of Soboba. Please help us organize this! The club has money for the food and drinks. We also have several gas barbeques on site. We need someone to take charge of the cooking and serving. We're counting on you! Please make this commitment. Lets continue to make Soboba a unrestricted free flying site. Darrel --------------------------------------- Addendum - At our last work party we cleared and smoothed out a nice large LZ for PG and HG use, but then those pesky 100+mph winds came along and rearranged some of our handywork. Darrel and Roger have since cleaned up much of the mess against the fence, but there is still much to move and dispose of. Please RSVP Darrel directly (951) 487-0053 or post here or on the Soboba forum if you can come. Roger has now said he will be providing the food, so a head count would be nice! Soboba is not known for many flying days in the fall and winter, but bring your wings just in case! Hope to see everyone there. Bob

Sylmar Fly-In (Dahlsten Cup) 9/13/08

The SHGA has scheduled the Dahlsten Cup Fly-In for Saturday 9/13/08 - one week after the CSS Fly-in. Activities vary from year-to-year but have included an Open Class and Sport Class competion with GPS scoring, a Chili Cookoff, spot landing contest, stated duration flight, and more. There is no fee to participate. The SHGA's day use fee is $5 but is pretty much an on-your-honor pay basis - no one is actively monitoring payment. If you honestly forget to pay - oh well. If you intentionally don't pay - you're a "real piece of work". Lunch/dinner usually consists of hamburgers, hot dogs, assorted snacks, chili, etc. A donation jar is usually out (but not always) and the money collected sometimes covers the actual cost of the food. If you honestly forget to make a contribution - oh well. If you intentionally don't ... (you get the picture). You're always welcome to cook your own food if you like - plenty of room on the BBQ. If you want to participate in an enjoyable day of flying, eating, and socializing - join us. More information on the SHGA (award winning) website.

Cotes Cliffs

Flying in Mexico, especially with the E-TEAM, is inexplicable! Last year we made a new ramp on the 250 foot cliff launch. This year, we have to try it out! Bring everything that you have that flies! The flying site is a 10 mile long, 250 foot high cliff located on a very deserted Mexican beach. There are no facilities, so bring everything that you will need to have fun, flying or not. 2007 EIGHTH ANNUAL WINDS OF A HURRICANE FLY-IN

2007 EIGHTH ANNUAL WINDS OF A HURRICANE FLY-IN Who: Organizer: Grant Groundhog Hoag & Hungary Joe Participants: 30-40 pilots, and you! What: Driving, flying, eating & drinking – Repeat daily for 5 days! When: Fourth of July Weekend – Wednesday 7/4 thru Sunday 7/9 Where: Hurricane Ridge & Cedar City near Zion National Park in Utah Why: Fun flying the last seven times we did it! The long version of the fly-in is: Qualified pilots are invited to join us on the Winds of a Hurricane Eighth Annual Fly-in. To be held on Independence Day and the following weekend (July 4-9 Wed-Sun), last year 35 hang gliding/paragliding pilots plus families, friends and dogs took over the Red Ledge Campground in Kanarraville, Utah, got high and went far in pure recreational flying. We always have a blast! Many pilots have made the trip 7 times. Most of the pilots are from Sylmar’s SHGA and Crestline’s CSS, but a pilot came from Detroit, too. This free trip attracts intermediate and advanced HG/PG pilots and their non-flying companions (yahoos and wusses can stay home). Located 130 miles northeast of Las Vegas, we’ll fly Hurricane Ridge and Cedar Mountain. This is the place for first time XC, ‘cause Hungry Joe’s Flying Circus will open gates and point to green pastures, red cliffs, cool rivers, sandy fields, dust devils, farmlands and friendly ranchers. Cedar Mountain is a morning site with easy XC flying over wide-open fields. Hurricane Ridge is a 15-mile windy escarpment jutting 400 feet above the desert. With afternoon ridge and thermal lift, you have got to fly over to the Zion River. Sinking out is a no brainer with road along all routes outta there. A 4-wheel drive vehicle isn’t needed for either (but is helpful – and that’s what friends are for)! We will be camping at Red Ledge Campground in Kanarraville near the morning flying site at Cedar Mountain, with cool air, hot showers, picnic tables at a grassy camping site (and 3 cabins available through Grant). There are hotels around, which are a little antisocial, a lot more expensive, but quieter and cleaner. If flying bites, then Zion National Park is nearby. There are lots of rivers, bike trails and restaurants nearby, not to mention the Virgin River LZ, which has been christened the official destination for drunkenness. We will have an orientation meeting on Sunday June 17th in the SHGA LZ at 6 PM. Want someone to share gas? Need a ride? Speak up at the meeting. Two weeks later on Wednesday July 4 we will meet at the campground at 9 AM. Spend the prior night in Vegas to chow down, sleep in a cheap bed, and cut the drive in half. Don’t be late (and someone always is) -- we don’t wait for stragglers. Alternatively, if you can arrive on the night of July 3rd, you can participate in the Kanarraville 4th of July parade before flying! Send an email to Grant ghoag@brwncald.com to let him know you are coming. He will take care of reservations at the campground but doesn’t need your money and he will send you a bunch of cool maps, photos and info. Grant: (h) (949) 387-5976, (c) (949) 370-8446 P.S. Be sure to read this month's USHPG magazine for story about a 107 mile XC from Hurricane!

Sylmar Comp Saturday October 14th 2006

Join SHGA pilots at their biggest comp of the year! There's a great Flying in Comps seminar at 9am, pilot briefing at 10:30, and a BBQ and chili cookoff. See www.shga.com for full details.

Mingus Mountain Labor Day Fly-in 2006

In case you didn't know. Or here it is again.
Come to The Mingus Mountain Labor Day Fly-in
We're doing a 3-day fun fly-in at Mingus over Labor Day weekend (fri, sat, sun). Near Prescott and Jerome Arizona. If you have never been to Mingus you need to see it. The Campground is almost complete and its for HG/PG pilots only. You don't have to fight for a space. If your a USHGA member you camp for free.
40 bucks gets you a tee-shirt, a barbeque
dinner Saturday night. Brauts, Chicken or Salmon with the fixens. Pilot's breakfast Sunday morning, and the chance to win lots of trophies.
USHGA membership is required, and always gets you free camping at launch in Prescott National Forest.
We have raffle givaways and silent auction items up for bid.
Quantum parachutes 440 and 550 with swival and bridal. Cacoon and tracer harnesses. Flytec 5030 and a sonic vario. They will start below cost. This is a fund raiser for the club. Bring your cash and lets have fun with this.

Normally it's a H3/P3 site but for the fly-in we're opening up to H2s if their local observer (who happens to be someone
we know) says they got the right stuff for this site. H2s will get head of line privileges at launch because launch will close
earlier for them than the rest of the pilots.
