CSS Road Trip #1 - Dunlap

Mark your calendars now, March 13-15 (Hey, Friday the 13th, what could go wrong?).

Here are directions to the LZ
ftp://ftp.knumbknuts.com/DunlapDirs.pdf

Plan A: Dunlap, California (We're going to Dunlap)
Plan B: Mingus Mountain, AZ

We will go to Dunlap if the weather predicts sled rides or better, no rain.

We will go to Mingus if Dunlap weather predicts rain or over the back winds and Mingus shows sleds or better, no rain.

Rain in both places = trip cancelled.

The max # on this trip is 15, due to the request of Dan, the LZ owner at Dunlap. The good news is: he has given me permission to invite PGs, which normally don't land at his LZ (other isssues non-CSS related play into this). H3/P3 required.

Here's a video of the joint:
http://vimeo.com/2018053

It should be quite scenic:
http://www.gofresnocounty.com/BlossomTrail/BlossomIndex.asp

There's indoor plumbing and showers there, camping in the LZ.

Fees:
- $20 donation to Dan, the LZ owner
- required $20 to Connie Locke for access to the launch, good for a year. Also good for any PG LZs her club may have lined up.

Please RSVP in/out on this thread. If we actually get close to 15, I'll start taking the $40 in fees/donations as deposits to be refunded in case of cancellation.

I like the idea of club outings. More site info...

Dunlap.

Mingus. Apparently it has been recently been improved for flying PGs there.

improvements

Hi Jerome,

Make sure you type the magic words: "I'm in" as it pertains to grabbing a spot for Dunlap.

Dunlap is much better for PGs at launch now.

The LZ we're going to be using is "Dan's LZ," normally not a spot for PGs to land but OK for us this trip.

I haven't reasearched Mingus much.

Whatever site wins this time, the other site will be top priority the next trip. So, if we pull off dunlap this time, Mingus will be top and dunlap will be backup next time. I figure the two sites are about as far apart as we can manage in terms of weather.

Spike's a big fan of Mingus and has me very interested in going there.

me

I'm in, especially if the scenery is as good as you claim. Could be a good time for picture taking!

I'll join you all. Thanks for putting it together John. It was great fun last time.

Got to keep the band together!

I'm in as well. Thanks John.

Sounds like fun. I'll most likely drive the RV with sleeping room for 2, (3 if someone doesn't mind the floor). Ideal situation would be having a car or truck follow. Let me know if anyone is up for it.

Great

Great, the site used to be an RV park, so that should be fine. As a matter of fact, if your landing goes long, you may hit a BBQ in the bushes. At least the softball field backstop and Oak Tree are gone. Ha.

Chris, if the "follow" doesn't pan out, we can at least grab your wing for you.

Dunlap

I'm in.

Dunlap - I'm in!

I want to go!

Not to question anyone's knowledge - but... Does anyone know what the weather could be like at Mingus in mid-March? Snow is possible and probably cold - like freezing at night. At 7,800' msl it likely won't be warm.

Been there in mid-May and again in June. Great place to fly, great campground, great locals.

I'm In

I'll see you guys at Dunlap. Also, I'd like to welcome myself to the CSS forum. Hello all!

w000t pilotguy

Great to have you here, Jeff.

Everyone, Jeff is one of the best pilots I've ever seen... best because he flew across the country to fly big sur, borrowed a wing, didn't feel the wing was safe, didn't fly. The fog rolled in with the opportunity to fly another wing. Cross country, beautiful site, holding back for the right reasons, going home skunked but in one piece... I'm just not that smart.

Anyway, welcome to California Jeff, it'll be great to have you on the trip!

May have to bail, sorry

Hey guys, sorry, but I have to bail on the road trip. I blew my knee out skiing a few weeks ago and it does not appear to be getting any better. It's an old HS football injury that I re-aggravated last summer while flying, and is now totally junk. There is no way I can lift a glider let alone run to launch and/or land. But, we'll give it another week before I make a final decision. Just wanted to give you guys a heads up.

Also, it's my anniversary on the 14th and after being gone with my students on Valentines Day weekend (skiing), going on the road trip just to be the driver may not go over well with the wife.

I'll keep you up to date.

nuts

darn, sorry to read about the knee and I can relate to that one.

don't sweat the driving... I've got a nephew lined up to drive (for a few bucks) in either place and a friend if it's Dunlap. Those with more money than time should't waste much of either and get in lotsa flights.

again, sorry to read it Gary... get that thing ready for the one in May.

I'm In

John, count me in if theres still availability for Dunlap. I can't do Plan B though. Thanks for the organizational efforts. PH# 714-223-0543

Fun times

Glad you are going to gun for Dunlap, Jack... after you there are three spots, so yes, there's room.

Dunlap is the one with the restrictions on numbers, so if it's Mingus the head count doesn't matter, thanks.

Dunlap

I just got a hall pass and I'm in for Dunlap if I can book a seat with someone. My Tahoe has a cracked head and I'm afraid it won't make the distance. I can pick up 2 or 3 gliders from AJ and save some the trip Friday morning. Let me know.

Don't remove me from the list yet. My wife wants me to go regardless, so I'll give it another week before I make a formal decision.

woot

great tom, I'm sure we'll have 'nuff room.

Hope you can pull it off Gary.

One spot left if it's Dunlap and everyone holds.

Dunlap

John how's the road to launch at Dunlap? I have room for two on my truck. I don't have a driver though and we would require assist to launch or turn around. My vehicle guzzles fuel so those who might sign on beware.

ride

Hey Jack, I'll help with gas.

dunlap launch

Hi Jack,

dunlap launch will take passenger vehicles, though the last bit is just a touch dodgy. It's a pretty good gravel road, kind of long, though... a little longer than it takes to get to Marshall.

I've got my nephew and a friend lined up as drivers at $100/day each, if people want to kick in. But, I haven't mentioned much because nothing, not even the destination, is in stone, yet.

If the weather is on, it's conceivable to get 3 flights a day in on saturday, and very easily one or two on friday/sunday. Ideally, I'd like to knock off a site for those going for their h4.

driver...

Hey all,

I might have my nephew lined up to drive. I said we'd pay him $100 a day... That's $20 or $25 a person to launch for the weekend, depending on whether I get six peeps in my van or 5. (I can't fit that many all the way up to dunlap or mingus).

Anyway, who has more money than time and would like to pay for a driver so you don't have to take turns driving? I might have another guy lined up for Saturday, same prices, but probably only the one day.

If more than 4 or 5 want in, then we'll try to get both, priority goes to those who responded first in the order listed above.

I'm not sure if Gary is coming/driving also, but it will be nice to have wire help on launch.

Also, don't forget to get those 2m radios dialed in.

drivers

I'll kick in for drivers.

I'll pay for drivers as well. Also- Motorhome info

I'll be driving my Motorhome up for the weekend. I have room for 2 (additional bodies), 3 if someone doesn't mind the floor (thick carpet and padding, actually it's not a bad option). DbyD already mentioned he had an interest. Anyone else- Its a 34' Bounder - very comfortable- beer's in the fridge- heater- Microwave- etc.

We'll share the fuel costs which should be around $200.(at 6 mpg). I don't mind picking up the majority of it if necessary.

Please post if you're interested.

-Chris VV

motorhome

You have a hg rack on the coach?

No Rack but...

I'm considering putting tie-downs on the roof this weekend. Either that or we can slide them inside for the drive via the emergency window in back. Shouldn't be an issue.

in

I'll take a spot if one is available. Where would we depart from?
Tom

Wings

I am carrying both my wings, but I think with all the vehicles we have, we can spread the others around. We can get into granular planning when we make the call a couple days before whether it will be dunlap or mingus (one forecast has rain on saturday at dunlap).

Sounds good Tom.

Assuming we're headed to Dunlap, We could meet off the 5 Freeway somewhere safe for your car/truck or we could meet at my house. I'm in Huntingon and at 6MPG I'd rather not backtrack to AJ. If Dunlap is out, we may want to take a smaller vehicle. Mingus is aproximately 450 miles each way which doesn't make sense in a motorhome.

weather and rain

Right now, Dunlap's got a lot of south in the forecast... this is a good thing. I'm looking at rain and as of now, it's possible on Sunday, but that moisture could just be clouds. Dunlap is far enough back in the Sierras that it gets mountain showers that don't hit the valley.

Right now, Dunlap is in the lead. Mingus is looking solid as a backup.

I suppose now would be the time for guys to start piping up as far as who can drive, I'll update the list at the top.

Ettiquette should be:
- Gas split, obviously, at least.
- HG road hazard maintenance costs should be split (e.g. flat tire on road to launch)
- Stuff that would have gone anyway (e.g. brakes) = owner's responsibility.
- Driver driving stupidly (e.g. like when I drove too fast on the road to Wild Cattle Launch and took out my transmission oil pan) = driver should pay, owner or otherwise.

Checking in

Gary, when do you think you'll have a status? Sorry to hear about the knee, bad news, I hope it feels better soon, and/or you can repair if needed.

I'm still planning on going. Not sure I have a ride yet, I was planning on riding/sharing gas with Gary P.

Everyone, if there are still openings for alternate rides, I may need one still. I live in Mission Viejo, and will need to arrange a meeting/parking spot.

John, if there are still openings to contribute to the paid driver, and I do get to go, I'll do that too. I'll also rotate as driver if the paid driver thing doesn't work out.

Squaw valley hotel

Ok, I am a wimp and I have a few bucks, so I am renting a room with 2 queens for $75/night at the Squaw valley motel. My nephew has the other queen and neither of us are queens so don't angle for our room kkthx.

But, there are 7 other rooms available at this time. It's about 10 miles from the LZ. The LZ has showers and indoor mens and womens banos, but I don't feel like sleeping in a tent.

Squaw Valley MotelSquaw Valley Motel
30894 East Kings Canyon Road
Squaw Valley, CA 93675

The proprietor's name is Anna, a nice Korean lady.

I will either leave Friday from the LZ at 9 AM, arriving Dunlap about 2 or thursday night from the LZ at 6 PM, for a full day's flying Friday. That depends on my nephew, I will make the call the day before (he's in Cabo and unreachable LOL). I figure we'll pull in between 11 and midnight on Thursday if that's when we go and Anna said we can check in late or call on the way up and she'll leave the door unlocked to the room. A real mom and pop op.

I'm going into town (Fresno) Friday night and probably will on Saturday (Sambas the Brazillian all-you-can-eat Churasco for Dunlap vets), so coming back to camp late just doesn't appeal.

Right now, it looks flyable all 3 days, possibly a bit inverted, maybe rain on Sunday. But, West winds are forecast for Sat. and Sunday, which is perfect for the ridge.

I'm calling Dunlap at this point, barring a significant change in the jetstream and forecasts of 50% or greater chance of rain on Saturday. I put the odds of this at 10% right now.

I need drivers to start piping up with: can you drive, how many pilots, and how many wings. It's not necessary for me, I'll pay my shares of gas, but some may be more inclined to drive if they pay for the wear and tear and everyone else gets the gas.

One other thing: Food.
I am going to be fending for myself, as in my nephew and me. I don't know the facilities for actual cooking at Dunlap and there are no fast food joints nearby, but there are one or two restaurants close and plenty not so close. I'd say break it up by car or fend fer yerself.

I'm going

JW,

I'm planning on staying at the LZ with tent and air mattress. MikeZ, Alan and Igor have signed up to ride along. Is there anything I need to do beside just showing up there Friday?

Looks like we got 3 for the RV, room for 1 more on the floor

Dave, Tom and I are in for the RV. Anyone else need a ride an a place to sleep?

Tom- any chance you can head out Thursday - either afternoon or evening?

I double checked the RV for glider transport- we can easily slide them inside and can stack 4 for the ride, no problem. We'll just have to step over them to grab a beer or hit the head.

-Chris

cash...

...I don't exactly have an over abundance of it at this moment. I can help with gas, the launch & lz funds, and dinner at Samba's again would be worth it but other stuff will be a bit tight.

I would be willing to act as driver on more than a few trips and judging by the number of pilots we have going, that may be necessary. Plus that would give me the opportunity to do a bit of video documentation. You guys would have to just not mind the camera "all up in yo faces." I would really like to try and make a "CSS Trip to Dunlap" film.

If the scenery is as pleasing as John makes it sound, I would like to try and get at least one evening flight with the camera boom for picture taking.

-Dave

Details

Friday's looking like the best day.

I may try to get out of town at least as far as Bakersfield Thursday night.

I'm a little worried about the rides and arrangements on the list. Is everyone going to be able to make it? Do we have enough vehicles?

Hey all, Mark needs a

Hey all, Mark needs a ride.....!!!

As of today, I do not know if I'll be coming. My knee is still jacked. I can walk, climb stairs and get around fairly well, even ran (limitedly) the other day, but I can not squat my knee and pick anything heavy up, ie: my hang glider and my ass.

Also, even though it is my anniversary, I have a hall pass. But, you all know how women say one thing and mean something else, well I'm not sure if "yes" means "Go to Dunlap with your friends and have a great time, but you'll be waiting till our next anniversary before you have the chance to consummate this one." or "Yes, go to Dunlap with your friends and have a great time, Love ya" Damn women, never will understand them.

It will be Thursday evening before I know for sure if I'm coming-or-cumming (either spelling works in this case). If I come to Dunlap, I plan to sleep in a tent and will bring my own food/drink and cooking supplies.

John, can you provide me with the location of the LZ/camping area. An address and/or coordinates will work. Is there an access gate and/or lock, or can we just drive in. What frequency will you all be on?

Gary

Rating: H3
WW Sport2-175

Gary's looking out for me, but

I haven't actually asked anyone else (besides Gary) for that ride yet because I'm figuring I'm going to take my chances with driving my own wreck up early Friday.

Keep an eye out for me along the roadsides (PVC glider rack)!

I'll be tenting it and supplying my own food too. I may not be able to make it to the Brazilian BBQ feast in Fresno. I'll pay to fly and ride, but funds are limited.

I'm guessing and hoping there will be drinkable water at Dan Fleming's LZ / Campground assuming that is where we are camping at???

John, is that where we are camping at?

An address would work best for me, if you can provide it.

John, I'm guessing the best route up there is the 5 to the 99 to the 63 near Visalia, to the 180 near Squaw Valley, to Dunlap?

Or is it better to go to Fresno and take the 41 to 180?

John, Do we have to make our own arrangements with Dan and Connie for camping or flying?

Thanks all,
Mark Z

Getting to Dunlap

Hey everyone,

I live in Mojave and can leave early Friday morning. I can drive my Civic which will do really good on gas but really hates unpaved roads and can only carry one glider in addition to mine. Does anyone still have or need a ride and is leaving Friday morning? I can be picked up in Mojave or can meet someone over in Bakersfield Friday morning, but not sure where I'd leave my car for the weekend. Maybe a park n' ride or something.

Also, I will be bringing rum.

I thought us old timers would show these pups a thing or two!

Hmm... Mojave

Hi Jeff... I will know more about my plans when my nephew gets back in the country.

It's possible we may drive from Temecula to Mojave Thursday night and stay there, leave Mojave Friday AM to get to Dunlap before noon, hopefully getting two flights in that day, including the sweet spot of the day.

But, that hinges on his schedule and my wife's, so no promises. We could probably stop by Friday, too.

But, at this point, I can't make guarantees.

Eek, not Friday Morning

Crap, I was just reminded by my coworkers that we are working this Friday in preparation for Something Interesting next week. I can't leave until 3:30 Friday afternoon. Anyone heading up around that time?
