Dunlap wrap upMike Z, Mike B, Everyday Dave, and I just got back from a fun trip to Dunlap. Friday, I drove while the others got in a late afternoon flight to get familiar with the new launch and landing. A storm system was rolling in, leading to some striking clouds in the background of a lot of my pictures. After packing up, we swung by a grocery store and got supplies for Mike B. to cook us a great dinner at my father's vacant house. Saturday, we had a driver and two of his assistants (young sons), but we got rained out. There was hail at the launch, lightning later in the valley behind, and a fair bit of water on and in our bags. We had to console ourselves with excellent Brazilian BBQ that night. Sunday helped make up for Saturday. Mike B. drove while three of us got extended sledders, with Dave making a nice jaunt across the valley. There was a PG XC competition on, so I used "I was dodging them" as my reason for sinking out. Right as we finished packing up, the local pilots started showing up and even brought enough drivers for one of them to bring my van down, so we all finished off the day with hour-and-a-half flights in cold but surprisingly lifty afternoon air. We all got about a thousand feet over launch to enjoy some spectacular vistas of the Sierra Nevadas and the foothills. Aside from learning a new site, we learned quite a few things: - Mike B's a helluva cook Below are some pics. We all want to go back up in April, when all of the wild flowers and the valley's "Blossom Trail" will be in full bloom. Let's go for more than one carload that time. The local flyers up there are quite friendly and hospitable. Dunlap's got a smooth ridge, lots of XC potential, a good LZ, a decent campground at the LZ, and great views. It's a nice bit of variety. I took this picture of the Dunlap ramp at cloudbase or 6,100 MSL on Sunday, Sept 23. bigger picAh, here's the link to the bigger pic: http://www.crestlinesoaring.org/system/files/images/Dunlap+Ramp+from+cloudbase-sept23-2007SM_0.JPG The 3rd wing in line is blakely, 4th is everyday D, 5th is me, 6th is Zeller. The guy in front was waiting quite a while for something that would tell him that he wouldn't sink out. The perspective of the camera in this picture says something about the what chances of that were. Dunlap - Sunday Sept 23.I took this picture of the Dunlap ramp at cloudbase or 6,100 MSL on Sunday, Sept 23. Heya patrickHiya Patrick, We are not surly or man enough to be e-teamers... they are from Elsinore nearby. It was great to meet you, hope you come down this way for a fly-in next year. Keep an eye on our forums for that info. See you again in April! E-team?Patrick, Thanks for checking the CSS site and sharing your photo. I watched you take off in the Falcon and gradually get up higher than any of us did...we all got to about 5,800. Good to meet you and I wish we had more time to hang out and get acquainted...long trip back home awaited. Re. E-team, well Mike Zeller and I are both new club members, having joined at the first meet this January. Can't meet the surly image, but actually the E-team guys are good people too as I'm finding the HG community is at each site I visit. Mike, I guess we had better take John and Dave out to meet Elsinore soon, the North winds are coming... ElsinoreDon't forget to get your paperwork in a couple of weeks before going. April Dunlap trip is on my list. Tom LaunchI got a cleaner picture of the launch from about 1000' up: http://flickr.com/photo_zoom.gne?id=1433725590&context=set-72157602134194088&size=l See all of my pictures from the trip: http://flickr.com/photos/designbydave51/sets/72157602134194088/ -Dave Next springNice pics, Dave... I think mid to late march would be good for next spring, to fly over these. http://www.co.fresno.ca.us/4510/tourism/BlossomTrail/BlossomIndex.asp Fun TripThanks for making that a Great Road Trip boys. I can't wait to do it again. The flying was fun and fine, but the company was even better. Stimulating discussions about everything ranging from hang glider flying to Monty Python’s Flying Circus. Dave, Mike and John are three learned gentlemen and a fund of information from science to culture. Never a dull moment. We even talked politics with civility. Tasty food, both Mike's home cooked and the Brazilian restaurant. John’s generous hospitality was matched by some impressive Walter Cronkite, Richard Nixon and Sean Connery impressions. Next time you see him get him to do them. Nice photos Dave and John. And the scenery was even more spectacular in person. Join us for sure in the spring Tom. (I don’t know if you’ve ever been there, but it has great capacity for XC if you’re interested. John and Dave were drooling over the possibilities.) And thanks for the reminder about the Elsinore paper work. (I’m with you Mike, we need to get Dave and John out to Elsinore. And Kagel someday too.) Looking forward to next time. Mike Z |

'Twas a great trip
First of all, thanks to John Wright for taking the lead to arrange this trip. It couldn't get any better than going to a new place to fly and having the luxury of staying in a comfortable house. Well, maybe Dave could complain about the comfort of a certain futon. :)
I can't wait to try out a few of Mike Zeller's math riddles on some coworkers, we all were stumped on one and yet the answer turned out to be strangely simple. You club members will have to wait until the April Dunlap trip to share it, so join up when the time comes.
A great new experience launching on the wooden ramp and also executing approach and landing into an LZ with very different configuration than the familiar AJ. We tried several different approaches and they all worked fine. Wind in the LZ was pretty much the same direction each time. Agreed that they could use a larger wind sock to be seen earlier in approach.
