hang gliding exhibit at john wayne airportsitting at the john wayne airport baggage claim area (as i often do) i've thought how cool it would be to see hang gliders hanging from the ceiling. after all, orange county is the home of wills wing, southern california was the epicenter for hang gliding in the seventies, and well, it's an airport! a month of emails, phone calls, letters, and face to face meetings with the airport administration followed... and this morning, i received notice from the curator of the john wayne airport arts commission that my proposal for a hang gliding exhibit at the john wayne airport, has been officially (and unanimously) approved! this is going to be an airport-wide, comprehensive hang gliding exhibit. 30 behind glass display cases that are 12 feet wide and 6 feet tall in both the south and north terminals! now, i need to fill these cases with hang gliding history... preferably orange county hang gliding history. if you, or someone you know, has some interesting artifacts, pictures, or other items that would be available for this exhibit, please let me know. i've been in contact with wills wing, maralys and bob wills, and ken de russy. they are all enthusiastically on board, and things are really shaping up, but you never know who has what out there. 10 million people visit the john wayne airport annually, so this is a great opportunity to educate the traveling public about our amazing and beautiful sport. thanks so much in advance! owen Forums > Events & Site Projects Flight > HG Sites > SoCal News > 2008 · Pilots joe greblothanks don. yes, i failed to mention that joe greblo, pat denevan, and rob mckenzie are also on board. jeff o'brien has offered some of his images too! Owen, you continue to amazeOne quick question: How is Rob going to breathe in that glass cage? Old ShotsWill you be interested in old shots of aluminum- oh, and on a serious noteIf there is 110v in any of those cases, I'll donate/lend through the course of the exhibit some kind of flat screen showing hi def videos of hang gliding, running in a loop. I'd budget a grand or so to that end, more easily done if I can keep the goodies at the end. If that's the case (no pun intended), I volunteer Dave and me for a case to that end. Maybe a video screen in the middle of a buncha images (screen caps maybe) of those videos. I'd want to get some HD cameras on some of our more advanced pilots in a hurry to beef up the footage. HD footageGood idea I will volunteer some footage for such an effort -Dave Lovely! Someone mentionedLovely! Vrezh. video is a go go!yes, i think some killer hd video footage playing in a loop is a must! i asked the curator at jwa about that a couple weeks ago, and he said that there are two display cases (one south, one north terminal) that have access to a 110v outlet, and that flat screens could work. john, dave, and vrezh... you're hired! thank you so much! rock on! and bettyI was looking through videos, thinking we could caption them with wills wing information and I realized that the harnesses are also often made in OC, not just by WW, but by Betty @ High Energy in Anaheim. Too bad there are no flying sites here. :* Latest status?Owen, it was nice meeting you at AJ on April 13-th, when we arrived via Trans-Sylmar Airlines. Best regards, updategreat to meet you too vrezh! and congratulations again on such a wonderful flight! at the moment, it looks like we are shooting for a spring of '09 exhibit. that gives us some time to put this thing together properly. i'll be getting the specs for the video soon. but so far it looks like we'll be able to have an hd video monitor in each terminal, and looping up to a 10 minute video. there are some specifics about exhibit content that the airport is concerned about. we are under no circumstances allowed to show a hang glider crashing (or whacking) or performing extreme aerobatics. anything that makes the traveling public "feel uneasy or apprehensive about their flight or flying" was the comment i received the other day. obviously this is open to interpretation, but it's something we need to consider. i've also been chatting with tom galvin who works for the folks who place the video adds in the baggage claim area. it looks like we'll be able to create a short video spot for those monitors as well! i visited the air and space museum at washington dulles two days ago to see how hang gliding was being shared with the public. although interesting, i think we can present hang gliding in a more personal and accessible manner through the use of video. thank you kevin!i love the idea of a new hang gliding student display. i will call you tomorrow to discuss! Another ideaWhat about a blown up color poster of a killer Google earth flight track to illustrate XC? |

I'll volunteer
This could be a great opportunity to promote the sport(s)
How about devoting one of those display cases to presentations from the training operations located around southern CA. Blowups of their pamphlets, site info, costs, courses offered, photos of their training proces ?????.....
AND / OR
Pictures and narrative of the training process, USHGA Instructor's Cert. Info etc.
Maybe someone at USHGPA has some materials we could use.
