Elsinore 5/16In general a pretty good day. Three hanggies and Everyday made 9000. Two Divers ended up in LZ a little early. Loads of excitement when Marcus came back to LZ to land. Water spout rose off end of lake while Marcus was attempting to lose altitude for landing. He had deployed a drouge way high in order to bleed off altitude. The Water spout turned into a major dust devil which came across highway and started up the LZ. We hung on to the two gliders in the LZ for dear life. Almost lost a litespeed with two unwilling passengers. Marcus was right over the field and when the dust cleared he was no where to be found. We got in the cars and went searching to find him in a field close to the shore line. No damage, but I'm sure if anyone has an extra pair of shorts he Forums > Pilot Reports Flight > HG Sites > Elsinore Thanks for flying with us OwenI arrived at launch at 12:30 to find it a bit strong for PG's. Watched 2 hangs launch then the base wind calmed down enough for an easy launch at 1:30. I went left because the prevailing wind was ENE straight at the South Face of Edwards bowl. I got over the tops but could only get 3-500' over. I worked at this for an hour. Then here comes Owen. I followed him up and back. Then he went west and I went south. Got high back over Elsinore peak. I ended up landing at my house, (7th time now). Drove back to the LZ in time to see Owens landing. |

an evil lz with the kindest folks
i'm not sure i'll ever figure out the elsinore lz. watching the windsock from above it went from east to west and back again in the span of three minutes. i was quite fatigued from an almost three hour flight, and i decided i'd play the cross-wind cross-slope card. i got worked by turbulence all the way into ground effect. i was a little early on my flare, so i tried to pull in and try a second later... left wing dropped, and now it was too late. whack, and stumble to the ground and scuffed my left elbow. welcome to the elsinore lz.
but wait, here comes everyday mike with a cold beer! there's spike with a big welcoming smile on his face. there's jack asking if i need a ride back up to my car. amazing. humbling really. such kindness to a guy who's just simultaneously bruised his elbow and ego. very kind indeed. thank you boys.
the flying was amazing. at one point i was in a thermal that hit 1200-1300 fpm on my 15 second averager! death grip on the base bar as debris flew up all around me at 8800 feet. i took a couple of glances at my reserve handle just to be sure i knew exactly where it was. at 9100 feet i couldn't take it anymore, i was getting slack wired every 10 seconds. i didn't need this kind of grief.
i took the altitude and made a bid for saddleback, and figured a flight home to tustin might be pretty cool. it was not to be, as i got drilled back down to 5k within 8 miles.
bring your "a" game when landing at elsinore. i think i've become a bit spoiled with the aj lz. but the kind folks you find in the elsinore lz make up for the harsh welcome.
