Marshall, 20 May 08

Before Noon at Marshall it was blowing lightly from E to SSE, some high wispy clouds getting denser as the sun got higher. There were some HG launches from the top SE launch (with long runs and low skims) and launches from the untrimmed S launch down below. I took the regular SW launch in a lull at 10:10, having waited out 10 minutes of 90 degrees cross or more. It was kinda soarable. The next flight, at 11:45, I took the S launch and pushed my basetube through the very tops of the bushes. The clouds were casting light shadows but it was mildly soarable. Some PGs had flown down too.

At 13:30 it was blowing solidly from the SW and the air was very bumpy. The high clouds had thinned back to just decoration. I kept thinking that I had the U2's VG on tight, but no, I was just getting pushed around. Mitch reported seeing 1400 FPM up at times. Still, good soaring and Rob's first tandem, a new HG student, got a good intro. At 15:15 it was still breezy and only 600-800 FPM over broad areas. Rob's student's friend's flight was mellower, but she seemed up for whatever the flight offered.

The PGs were having good flights as well. There were some Brazil Nuts, including William, hanging out on Marshall all day and they were cranking some good mellow Brasilian pop tunes that made it feel like the beach after a while.

For the last flight, at 16:50, I was glad to have a Falcon 3 after several T2Cs as it glassed off.

In the LZ it turned out both of Rob's earlier tandem students were working on the bunny slope and having typical first day experiences. Cool!

I had a great 2+ hour flight

I had a great 2+ hour flight yesterday (landed because I was late for my son's semi-final baseball tourney (they lost:( )

I launched at 1345 in light cycles of S-SE winds and found light to moderate bumps in decent lift but never got above 5100, although that could certainly be because of me. I'm still new (after a 16 year break) but was able to work out west of Cloud peak and back to Radio Towers several times.

Down at 2500 feet just above the LZ I found lots of smooth lift and a bit of trouble getting down, which I wouldn't have minded except that now I was late.

Somebody had caught a gopher snake near the LZ, I hope he does his job (when he's done there, can I borrow him, they're tearing up my yard!?!)

Thanks for the update Ken.

Chris
