Elsinore Fri 9-26We arrived at launch early as me and another PG caught a ride with 2 HG pilots that HAD to be on launch early. The other PG pilot is visiting from Kansas City MO. He flew today to 9K and flew over Santiago Peak and back to the beach near my house after almost 3 hours. I went 'almost' to Santiago Peak myself. Just past Los Pinos is where I turned around and headed back. I got to 8600' msl. A lot smoother than the last few days. I then went all the way to the South towers and came back to launch. I had a great landing in the LZ after 2 hours and 15 min of great flying. Forums > Pilot Reports Flight > PG Sites > Elsinore You're Killing MeAll these reports of flying Elsinore are getting to me. Who do I need to be in touch with to do my first HG flight there on a decent day? Is there short list of newbie buddies? LOOOOOOW saveI was unzipped and ready to land, hitting sink all the way to the LZ. Then a little bump just above the hairpin turn just above the LZ. One turn and I am higher, then another turn, oh yea, this is it, thank you thank you thank you!!! 20 minutes later I am way above the mountains and headed to Saddleback. I think I was 8K plus but one of the Nimh cells in my vario died so I had no instruments. Saw Spike really high out over the valley, he must have been almost to Lake Mathews after rounding Saddleback. Flew for two hours and landed in the Oak tree LZ. Where I found a ton of NO TRESPASSING signs and the gate at the upper entrance LOCKED. |

Great Flying
Launched at 12:45. Turbulence over the house thermal forced me down in front of the E. Almost gave up when I caught a tight bullet thermal. Cored it up to launch height. Two panties over the back scratching decided to join them. Unable to locate any lift sank out and returned to the E. Serious scratching close to the hill and in the tuck zone. Mike Harper on his litespeed joined me and we began
dueling it out for what little lift there was. Mike gave up and headed for LZ. Shortly thereafter solid thermal broke off putting
me up and through the crap. Mike made a very low save near LZ.
Caught Spike at 6600 he went out towards the lake climbing I went to the ranches looking for lift. Didn't find anything got low over launch and headed back to the E. Found another boomer and climbed back up to 6000. Saw a major dust devil develop just SW of the towers. Began heading towards it. It eventually dissipated, but I continued on arriving over the field it had been. Climbed to 9500.
Couldn't find anyone else in the air. Headed for saddleback. Lost alot of altitude on way, but at Rad Dans climbed up to 8500. Passed two panties one returning from Saddleback. Got to Santiago Peak and decided that I might not make it back so I aborted saddleback attempt. Turns out Spike was circling over Saddleback and didn't make it back. Landed at 3:45. Last person to land in the LZ (semi legally).
P.S. Old (Oak Tree) LZ is closed. Signs posted gates locked.

It was really good while it lasted.
