Switch Approach Patterns?

"If ya can't lick 'em..."

Over the years it's been noticed that our PG community rarely uses the right-hand approach pattern that someone(s)chose as the pattern they should use.
I admit that I know nothing about the thinking that went into the choice of patterns for HG and PG. I hope to be enlightened soon, and I'm sure I will be.

Meanwhile, I'd like to suggest that maybe we should try switching the patterns for a trial period. At best, we might find a solution to what some believe is a problem. At worst, we learn something.

Personally, I haven't had much of a problem, just what I would refer to as a minor irritation at times. This I think consisted of having to abort an attempt at a spot landing (HG) a few times.

But I've heard complaining at times, and the recent thread concerning a noobie PGer kiting in the wrong place, have inspired me to make a suggestion.

Paragliders typically have a steeper glide angle than Hanggliders. This is even more apparent when there is a stiff breeze blowing.

So why not let them have the easier to reach left-hand pattern, and we plumbers can use the right-hand approach?

I admit it may take me a few flights to adjust to it, I'll probably forget and do it the way I'm used to.

Approach Changes

No! No! No! I don't want to kickum, or lickum or change my approach!

No Thanks

I'd prefer not to have to do a 270 degree downwind right hand turn to final on west days just because a PG might not manage altitude well on a 3.8:1 glide from Marshall... or simply chooses to ignore ettiquette.

Plus, wouldn't that lead to kiting across the (hypothetical) HG spot after landing?

Thank you John, Some

Thank you John,

Some Normalcy Finally.

Ah, well, not the first

Ah, well, not the first time I've crashed without even getting off the ground....

Hang Gliding is inherently fun

Change is bad

I only worry about the transition period. Left or right ...I don't care. But administering - publicizing - training - enforcing such a change, no thanks. If you have some good ideas on this, I am all ears.

Distance Required Vs. Distance Available

The reason the east side of the LZ is the HG side is that it gives the HG pilots the longest possible runway to land on (heading into the prevailing SW wind). An HG landing approach into the west side of the LZ, heading SW, has much less overshoot room (especially if there are PGs kiting near the western slope or HGs parked on a crowded day) and the ground under the approach path is higher too. PGs come in at a much steeper angle and need very little overshoot area, so they are assigned to land on the more restricted side of the LZ.
