Wings and Twist

Interesting little article from the LiveScience site.
For Wings, Nature Loves a Twist

Obviously, some people need to get out of the lab and go to a hang gliding site.

ReNups

It seemed as if we pulled off a complete surprise at Crestline to judge by Dianne's reaction. Owen proved a capable "marryin' man" providing a funny and touching MC to the proceedings. The weather seemed to cooperate in it's own way, being both cool enough and providing great launch opportunities. Congratulation, Rob and Di! Pictures will follow.
Huge thanks to all who made this celebration possible. The streamers on the gliders gave a cool graphic display of airflow around a wing above launch, especially the longer ones. I tried that years ago on RC power planes successfully, but this was much more impressive. Did anyone notice a difference in flight? Now I'd really like to try it with loooooooonnngg streamers.

Cool powered flight vid

I now know that Hang gliding is the purest form of flight but thought some of you would like to see the latest in powered flight.

Hang Gliders and Paragliders on Marshall Peak in Google Earth

Hang Gliders and Paragliders on Marshall Peak in Google Earth

This is the Google Earth view of Marshall Peak as of 5 June, 2009. It shows seven hang gliders and two paragliders on Marshall Peak. I don't know when the image changed from just the bare peak, but I think that's what was shown as recently as a couple of months ago.

Smoke Wall Across Fontana - OC and LA Fires

Here's a view from a turnout on 138 to Crestline, Sunday 11/16 around 16:00.
The light Santa Ana winds were holding the smoke from the Triangle Complex and Sayre fires in a wall over Fontana.

Sad News - Paul MacCready passes

I just got news that Paul MacCready passed away last week. Paul was a huge inspiration to me personally, and I was lucky enough to meet him on one occasion at Caltech.
There's a terrific book about Paul, and soaring, and human powered flight called "More with Less." I recommend it to anyone interested in soaring.

Flying with a snake

Picked this up off the Cessna 150 list:

Snake on a plane
Friday June 02, 2006

When Monty Coles lifted his small plane into the air for a leisurely
flight over the West Virginia countryside, he didn't know a
blacksnake had stowed away inside the airplane's instrument panel.

"As far as I was concerned, everything was fine," said Coles, a 62-
year-old private pilot from Cross Lanes. "I did a very cautious pre-
