Planning Commission Meeting - Nov 5, 2008 (Short Report Added)

The City of San Bernardino Planning Commission will consider the University Hills development project at their Nov 5 meeting (Agenda page).

At this point the proposal is unchanged, despite almost 300 letters from the Hang Gliding Community.

This will be an open, public meeting at 7:00 p.m. at City Hall.

This is the next step in a long road to have the proposal changed to support Hang Gliding.

Will it help to show up?

Will it help to show up? Would we get a chance to speak? Address?

Hang Gliding is inherently fun

Showing Up

Yes on all points.

anyone go?

did anyone attend the meeting?

Several Attended

Alan Crouse, Rob & Diane McKenzie, Megret Olewiler, and Ken Howells attended. Alan was going to use my and Rob's 3 min/ea, plus his own, to make a presentation (w/PowerPoint) on our approach issue but it turned out time was not transferrable, so I did the opening history/color section, Alan did the gritty details, and Rob did the wrap-up.

Excerpts from Alan's post-meeting emails:
  1. After a couple of last-minute twists (like not being able to dedicate multiple people's times to one speaker), Ken, Rob and I made our presentation to the Planning Commission tonight. Megret also spoke and charmed the Commission with her description of what Hang Gliding means to her and the international pilots she has entertained (seriously, you should have seen their faces during her presentation).
  2. Ultimately we lost on a very close 4 - 3 vote and the University Hills project now moves to City Council for final approval.
  3. Several of the Commissioners and the Mayor's Office representative have offered to assist us in working with the DWR on expanding the landing area westward. Several of the Commissioners asked during the hearing how they could do something for us.
  4. Last night went much better than I had expected. The developer is quite entrenched at the City and I wouldn't have been surprised to be dismissed rather quickly by the Planning Commission. Instead there was considerable discussion from the dais...
  5. More to discuss on Saturday.

There's also a brief article in the Friday edition of The Sun newspaper.
An earlier notice has a number of reader comments.

Good Flying,
