Overview

AJX LZ is obstructed by the Marshal range. Under normal flying conditions all known hang glider types can reach AJX by using the route mentioned above with the glider ratio. The ground cover between Crestline launch and the Marshall range is inhospitable and one’s flight planning should be conservative to ensure that one does not get low behind the Marshall range. There is a rotor area low behind the Marshall range that is produced when the prevailing winds come across the top of the Marshall range.

There is one emergency bailout field in Devil’s Canyon. This field should not be used for normal flight planning. The grounds drops off steeply around the perimeter of the field and there are numerous rocks in the vicinity. Because of the dropoff, pilots should land straight into the hill, which generally is not a direct headwind. Any pilot whose flights may end with the necessity to use the bailout should drive up to the bailout and walk the field to familiarize themselves with the layout.

Devil’s canyon frequently has venturi-induced strong winds, and this fact should also be taken into consideration when pilots determine the suitability of landing at the bailout field.

Pilots must familiarize themselves with this information before arriving, and this information DOES NOT replace the need for an in-person site briefing from a local pilot or instructor familiar with the area.
