    For the last couple of years, sprinklers have come on early in the morning, 5 am or so.

    The number of people around at that time was very low.

    I recently changed them to start at 10pm.  That’s late, but it’s not unheard of for people to still be yakking in the LZ at that time.

    The sprinklers immediately around the shade structure are zone 10, and will be the last to start.

    So if the other sprinklers start, be aware that stuff near the edges of the shade structure should be pulled well back.

    Speaking of sprinklers – my recent videos have been getting remarks from around the world about the condition of our LZ grass. I do not recall whether it was this dry and brown during the months of August in the past. Is it any different than past years and if so, what can I tell people about it?

    I believe we were having some pipe-bursting issues, among other things, which led to no water on the grass. It’s the worst it’s looked since the last four years I’ve been at AJX, but hopefully it can get figured out soon. Plus it’s ungodly hot… 100F to 111F in the last month and no rain. Other parts of the world get plenty of rain in the summer to make that a non-issue for their sites, I would think.  Did I mention gophers? So many….

    Yep, that was it.

    The 4 inch main pipe broke, and there was no watering for three or four days during a very hot segment.

    Got it back together, it ran for a week or so, then it broke again, in a different spot, just before the heat wave.

    I’ve fixed the pipes again, and we are watering, but the damage is done.  I felt like it was doing pretty well up until the first break.

    There’s now an automatic shutoff if any of the stations flow too much water.  I’d still have to fix it, but at least we won’t lose the water.

    The next project is a pressure relief valve that should eliminate any water hammer, which is what is suspected to cause the pipe breaks.

    I still need to backfill the holes dug to fix the pipe.   If anyone’s feeling like a little manual labor, walk over where the piles of dirt are and either throw the big rocks over the side, so they don’t go back in the hole, or  throw some dirt in the hole with a shovel.

    Once the dirt is up to the level of the pipes, I can use Gracie to fill in the holes without much chance of  breaking the pipe.

    Synthetic grass, artificial turf is used on high school, college, municipal and professional athletic fields. Also in city parks and commercial installations. There’s a lot of it out there. At some point the stuff has to be replaced. I’m sure the used material would work for AJX. The entire LZ wouldn’t have to be covered. There’d be some work and expense involved putting it down. But the club could stop paying … what is it, $1800 a month for water. And no more pesky gophers and their mounds and divots.
