Edit: The Fire Captain let me know they needed to CANX this training event due to unforeseen circumstances. No landing restrictions on Monday & Tuesday, 21-22 April.
The San Bernardino County Fire Department will be holding a training event on Friday April 18th and then again on Monday & Tuesday April 21 & 22. This will be a multi-agency training exercise with CAL FIRE and other local Fire Departments and may include aircraft. They have requested, and the BOD has agreed to allow them to utilize our LZ at AJX for these events with flight operations closed during the time of the event (but not all day).
Many of the training events scheduled will physically occur in the area around AJX and not actually on the LZ, but one event that will be conducted on the LZ grass is practicing the deployment of emergency fire shelters. There will be two training sessions per event day, one in the morning and again in the afternoon.
AJX LZ will be closed for all training, kiting, and landing until 4pm each day. Launches are not closed, so if you do fly on any of these three days you must;
1. Confirm the LZ is fully clear after 4pm to land in the LZ.
2. Top-landing is permitted any time.
3. Do not land in the overshoot or under-shoot prior to 4pm, this is still the AJX LZ and is still closed.
4. If ‘landing out’ in other locations in the area, respect land owner’s rights. Do not put the CSS in a bad position with poor judgment on your part.
April 14, 2025 at 8:14 PM #21952Friday April 18th is forecast for some rain and North Winds, so its not likely that anyone has plans to fly anyway.
Monday and Tuesday next week (21-22 April), on the other hand, are forecast to be sunny, high 77, and winds WSW… still a bit far out for a soaring forecast. We typically get limited activity on weekdays.
With all that said, this is the first time since I have been with the CSS over the last 6 years that any local first responder agency has asked our club for anything. These are the people who come to our aide when a pilot needs a rescue or an ambulance is called to the LZ… this is our chance to give back to them! This is why the CSS BOD enthusiastically agreed to their request to use our space.
Let’s not screw this up… let’s not test any limits. I would really just like everyone to take those days off all together, but we are not completely shutting down all flight operations because that’s not completely required. For anyone that just has to fly on those days… make good choices, don’t land before 4 pm, and make sure the LZ is clear before approaching in the case the FD is running late on the event.
Please also note that the AJX Parking Lot will likely be VERY full with all of the agencies participating in the training events. Just let them have the space and just keep clear, even if you are intending to fly late day and land after 4pm. Make alternative arrangements for parking and rides up to launch.
