I was flying Marshall/Crestline for a week about a month ago and masks were a rarity in the LZ. I’ll be back out next week and I would love to see people wearing masks and socially distancing. Nothing political about this. I’m old but I hope to have many more years of flying so let’s be safe. Wills Wing is temporarily closed due to an employee’s family member contracting Covid. Let’s keep flying but let’s be real about the risks and act accordingly.

I’ve noticed that a few of the older high-risk pilots are staying home and not flying at all. Luckily this is an outdoor activity that (outside of getting a ride up the mountain) is pretty solitary. I believe that anyone taking the Sandy van shuttle up to launch is required to wear a face-mask. She won’t let you ride otherwise, and she’s also limiting the number of people in her van.

It doesn’t seem too difficult to keep a safe distance from other people on the grass, or especially if taking one’s own car up to launch. We have soap and water on site, so washing one’s hands frequently shouldn’t be a problem either.

We definitely would like for everyone to be considerate of others, so yes, please bring a mask even if you think you’re healthy, keep a safe distance from other people when at the LZ, wear your mask when close to others, try not to touch your face and wash those hands. No need to take preventable risks.

Jana, I found your comments to be dismissive at best. We have a medical crisis in this country, in this state and in this county. Wear the damn mask. Stay away from me. Get smart and don’t be stupid carrying covid to others. You may feel young and healthy but you do not know if you are a spreader.

The last time I was at AJX a month ago people were gathering just as they always had done before Covid. No masks while standing or sitting close together. I did take my glider off to the side to breakdown. But I found it very disappointing that the flying community was so dismissive of the threat to others. We need to do better. All it takes is wearing masks and socially distancing and we can start to put this damned virus behind us before it destroys this country. Act like grownups.

I think it’s clear from my post that we want people to be considerate of others and wear their masks when necessary:

It’s also important that if someone feels their health is at high risk, to do what they can to avoid contact with other people. As much as we’d like, we can’t always trust others to do the right thing. Unfortunately we’re not always there to police the LZ, we’re all just volunteers, so if you’re out there and see somebody putting others at risk, please remind them nicely to wear their mask.

Personally I bring my mask to the LZ and I try to wear it when I’m close to others, but I also don’t spend much time at the LZ. I go up to launch, I fly, I land, I pack my gear and try to leave fairly shortly thereafter if I can. Let’s all try to minimize our chances of getting sick, and/or infecting others by taking the necessary precautions.

Bo/Kim – we take your concerns and comments very seriously. You make very valid points, and while we can’t really lock down flying or the LZ to only those with masks, as a club we can strongly encourage everyone to take proper precautions, such as safe social distancing, wearing masks/face coverings, and good hand hygiene.

Per this discussion, we took the opportunity to update the home page to include that encouragement, and to also make available O-fficial CSS branded face coverings. Check ’em out.

There are exceptions to the face mask rule. This is one of eight exceptions:

Persons who are engaged in outdoor work or recreation such as swimming, walking, hiking, bicycling, or running, when alone or with household members, and when they are able to maintain a distance of at least six feet from others.

Clearly the distance rule cannot be maintained in a shuttle, etc, but easily done at both of our launch sites, and in the LZ (outside the shelter areas) so wearing masks is a personal choice and not a mandate. Studies on the spread of the virus have shown outdoor transmission is rare and low risk.

I’ve found through all this situation that you have to do what is right for YOU! If that means social distancing, etc. than do it, to protect yourself. If you are a high risk person, or you know or live with someone that is, just do it.

Nobody can do it for you!

It’s kinda like driving a car. Most of us, a little of us, a small portion of us, abide by the rules and laws. Speeding, tailgating, running or California stops, etc., we are all guilty of. Most of the time it turns out OK, but sometimes serious consequences do occur. Death can even happen in some cases. Take our sport for instance, if good judgement is not used.

One good thing about all this “social distancing” thing . I like the personal hygiene aspect. You don’t have to brush your teeth, use deodorant or use mouthwash. If everyone is keeping their distance, they can’t smell you? And if they can, the’re to close…

While in the air and launching, I prefer the 50 meter distance to my flying friends. The site got crowded today, we had 3 show up.

Most of the Central Coast pilots make the run up to Sand City in the Monterey area this time of the year. . It’s on and much cooler if your needing a road trip and cooler temps. I almost broke into a sweat hiking back up to my truck after flying.
