Noticed the club’s skiploader broke down on the side of 2n40.
Its been there 3 weeks. Might want to go get it off the side of the hill before it gets parted out.
And no, I’m not talking about Tim going up and spending another 4 days of his life on it.
He has done enough already and its time for another to step up.
September 22, 2023 at 2:32 PM #18941Looking into it. Hopefully we can figure it out and get it resolved.
September 23, 2023 at 7:38 AM #18945Wasn’t that skiploader , donated to the club ?
Like most people : Unless it’s bought and paid for from hard work ; there is usually No appreciation.
Jean asked several pilots to help with the radiator ; there response was (can it be done, before we fly). LOL
Jean is ((NOT)) going to do it by himself (.) I donated my time to do the job ; but Jean is kinda pissed about the lack of interest from members , in this club.

Best I can recall it was a 50/50 deal; club paid half and the Foundation for Free Flight covered the other half (they like the locals to have a stake when they donate).
“Gracie” has been moving dirt for the club for so many years now that most members probably think she’s been here forever :-)
Tip of my hat to Gene too, he’s sure logged a lot of hours in that seat.

September 23, 2023 at 8:03 AM #18947I think there’s a bit of confusion here. Gene, Dan and Tim are the only people in the club using Gracie for projects and road maintenance (as far as I know). Whenever Gracie needs repairs and replacement parts, one of them lets the CSS board know what’s going on and the board cuts a check for repairs.
Lately (as in the last couple of years) Gracie has been used for what I would dub personal projects, even though we’ve been told they are for the benefit of the club. Examples include spreading out tons of dirt we didn’t ask for. In fact, we’ve been begging for it to stop. Despite the questionable/unauthorized use of Gracie, the club still pays for the repairs when we are told they are needed.
When I saw this post, that was the first I heard of Gracie being broken down and abandoned on a road somewhere. We are now trying to get someone who has experience fixing and driving heavy equipment to look at it and move it to safety. Can’t act on fixing a problem if we don’t know there is a problem. This seems to be a case of broken communication.

Could you elaborate a bit further , please ; what personal projects are you referring to,”Exactly” ?

September 23, 2023 at 8:36 PM #18952Billie, I’m talking about the dirt piles that were brought in by countless trucks, ordered by someone who had no authority to allow such things, which then had to be spread out, so that more could be brought in against the board’s wishes.
September 23, 2023 at 8:49 PM #18956I think it was about 2006 when we got Gracie (named as a mix of gratitude and grease). The Foundation for Free Flight did split the cost with the club and they asked me to report with a written article. Here is a link to what I wrote. Included is a story on getting in way over my head at a heavy equipment auction. When you have a spare 15 minutes, it’s a good story.
September 23, 2023 at 9:34 PM #18957Iaroslav RastryginGeneral MemberWho could provide more details about scope of required work on that skiploader ? The only thing I heard from Gene is that radiator needs to be replaced . Dropbox document mentions skiploader is Deere 210LE , is that correct ? Has it (the replacement part) been ordered ? What kind of help is needed, besides strong hands and a toolbox full of keys and ratchets ?

I live in Las Vegas, and wasn’t fully informed ; was just trying to get the entire story. I do know that a lot of the dirt was dumped , “Before” the new board took control , and that is where the confusion came from.

September 24, 2023 at 8:01 AM #18960Luke and Tim would be the best source of contact for that. Luke is our site coordinator and Tim frequently uses it to fix the roads. Kelly has offered his help as well, but regardless of whether that works out, it would be great to have more people with expertise in heavy equipment for times like these. Please get in touch with Luke by e-mailing: sitecoordinator@crestlinesoaring.org
I’m told that Jeff Bether (our treasurer) kindly picked up the new radiator and now we also need replacement fluids such as anti-freeze, hydraulic fluid and distilled water. Luke said he would pick some up on his way to the LZ.
Big thank you to anyone/everyone willing to help us out with Gracie! 🙏😎
September 24, 2023 at 8:07 AM #18961Rob, thank you for posting that! It should be in our club library, if it isn’t already. 🙏😎
September 24, 2023 at 8:11 AM #18962No worries Billie. I know you haven’t been here for that. Not many people are aware of everything that happens around the LZ behind the scenes. I don’t know what the previous board allowed or condoned, but I bet a lot of it wasn’t discussed, voted on and approved like we thought.
September 24, 2023 at 8:57 AM #18963Unfortunately my CSS email is locked for some reason and I need to wait for an unlock (again). If any member wants to call me about this I don’t mind people having my personal cell, 619 316 2736
As Jana explained, a few weeks ago we were informed that Gracie needed a radiator repair, which we took care of. Jeff (Treasurer) picked up the completed radiator at a local shop and delivered it to one of the containers. Getting to the actual install of the parts ran into a couple logistic hurdles when myself and Tim were both out of town for a bit on opposite ends of the continent.
In any case, I went and picked up the fluids last night (anti-freeze, distilled water, and hydraulic fluid) and I’ll be on my way up there shortly (Sunday, 24 SEP by 1pm). Kelly has volunteered to come give and hand and Tim should be on hand to advise. Still, anyone who feels like they want to help is welcome to join us.
September 24, 2023 at 11:31 AM #18964Allo, I am a long time member, but rarely fly at Crestline as it is not my “local” spot. I am a bit of a drive away, and at an age where I am Not likely to donate time, blood or sweat for helping here, but am, instead, always (almost always) willing to kick in a few dollars for things like this, or to treat the “workers bee’s” 🐝 to a pizza or “beverage” for their labor. How much are the repairs expected to total?
