215 & University Parkway 55-Hour Closure for Final Work
The San Bernardino County Transportation Authority (SBCTA) has announced a scheduled 55-hour full closure of University Parkway at the Interstate 215 crossing, including all on- and off-ramps, to complete reconfiguration work for the new Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI).
The closure is planned from 9:00 PM on Friday, April 17 through approximately 5:00 AM on Monday, April 20.
Motorists are encouraged to plan ahead, allow extra travel time, and use alternate routes. Access to the I-215 in both directions will be available at Palm Avenue. Kendall Drive and Hallmark Parkway will be used to help navigate around the closed University Parkway underpass. Detour routes will be posted.
Access to businesses along Hallmark Parkway near the interchange will remain open during the closure.
The work will install several final improvements to the new diverging diamond interchange, which officials say has already improved safety, reduced congestion, and helped keep traffic moving more efficiently.
This is expected to be the last major closure for the project, which is scheduled for completion in May.
In the new DDI configuration, traffic on University Parkway approaching I-215 will shift to the opposite side of the roadway at a signalized intersection. After passing through the interchange, traffic will switch back at the next signal. This design removes the traditional left-turn signal phase, improving capacity and efficiency without adding additional lanes.
The first Diverging Diamond Interchange in the United States opened in 2009 in Springfield, Missouri. Today, more than 90 are operating nationwide, with several additional projects underway in California.
Construction on the $25.7 million project began in November 2024 and is funded through a combination of federal, state, and local sources, including Measure I ($16.39 million), federal funding ($5.7 million), and the City of San Bernardino ($3.6 million).
