Hello! Relatively newer CSS member here, having joined in mid 2023. I often fly over the club pond or walk past it when hiking to the 750 launch. Today (7/6/2024) I visited and was told it was no longer accessible for club pilots except for special occasions, but other pilots at the LZ seemed unaware of this rule. What’s the deal with the pond so that I’m clear going forward?
July 7, 2024 at 5:51 PM #20593Unfortunately, it’s not the club’s pond. The Cross Country Ranch used to be open to pilots and families – but never to the general public. Due to an inability to get insurance, it is now closed except for specific supervised events that are announced in advance to the club.
Using the road up for hike and fly is fine. The liability concerns are fairly specific to the pond though. So, they have asked that no one use the pond except again, for specific supervised events.

July 10, 2024 at 9:47 AM #20605No soup for you, Tom.
July 10, 2024 at 8:34 PM #20612I’m not sure if you are joking Tom… but just in case you weren’t: The XC Ranch was not donated to the CSS, the ranch became its own Not For Profit entity and the land was donated to that.
July 11, 2024 at 6:18 AM #20613Tom SwansonGeneral MemberThanks for the clarification, Luke. I wasn’t joking, just misunderstood what took place.
July 11, 2024 at 5:48 PM #20619Tom SwansonGeneral MemberWill there be pond access for the Fly-in?
July 11, 2024 at 8:55 PM #20620I don’t think so, Owen is out of town this weekend.
July 12, 2024 at 7:05 PM #20628Linda SalamoneGeneral MemberThe club enjoyed the use of the pond for a long time through the generosity of the XCR owners and a thoughtfully crafted agreement. A series of events has rendered this beautiful amenity to the club inaccessible. Recall that there was a concerted effort by the former BOD to cut off funds to Len and Owen for the water access. The informed club members came out en masse to put a stop to that tragedy. Then another campaign was enacted to harass the XCR owners by repeatedly contacting county code enforcement to have me and Gene Embree removed from the property. Along with the mess of insurance issues that began with that same former BOD, it just became too much of a hassle and expense to continue the status quo. Thanks to Len for having the foresight to protect the leased property (for now!) from developers that could prevent use of the LZ. The pond is a huge loss but after spending $100k on a shade structure erected on leased property, maybe protecting use of the LZ is a priority? So… no pond for you, and you, and you. Stop with the sense of entitlement. Lay blame squarely upon the shoulders of the person/people responsible. Want names? I’ve got them 🤓
July 13, 2024 at 5:55 AM #20630Tom SwansonGeneral MemberWow Linda, sounds like you need a flight. There wasn’t any anger or hatred in this thread, just questions.
July 13, 2024 at 6:03 AM #20631Linda SalamoneGeneral MemberNo need to get defensive if you’re not one of the troublemakers.
There have been recent serious alterations with folks who think they have a “right” to the property. Some aren’t even pilots. My post was intended to help club members understand why they lost what they lost instead of throwing shade on the wrong people.
July 13, 2024 at 7:06 AM #20632Tom SwansonGeneral MemberLet it go. Time to move on. No need to rub salt in old wounds. Go for a flight. Enjoy what we have before the housing development starts.
July 13, 2024 at 7:11 AM #20633Linda SalamoneGeneral MemberAnd yet here you are, still responding 🥸
July 13, 2024 at 8:14 AM #20634John WrightGeneral MemberI remember when the club members helped roll out the liner, I was boggling at the potential liability. I closed on my house that weekend and had to scramble there from the pond liner roll-out to replace a gate and lock it so I could fill my pool. An unfenced, swimmable pond was unimaginable. Glad it might still be available at all & thanks to Len, Owen, & the ranch for that.
I doubt it’s a political thing, such as retribution by the Ranch for the threat of funds being cut. The politics probably pertain to code enforcement by the County of San Berdoo. That thing started as a holding pond for watering the lawn. Not sure if it’s still doing that, but I’m low-key amazed it hasn’t been forced to be drained by the county.
July 13, 2024 at 1:16 PM #20641Tim WardGeneral MemberIt’s still being a reservoir for watering the lawn. AIUI, it was inspected and signed off by SB Co. during all the hoo-haw over camping at the Ranch.
