*** Please see latest updates posted last in the thread for any changes ***
*** This order has expired, no additional orders have been posted. There are no further restrictions to SB National Forest at this time ***
NFS has modified the closure order due to the Line Fire, the closure area is now limited to the fire affected zone and other adjacent threatened areas.
What does this mean?
– AJX and all of the Launches, as well as N240 (Cloudland Truck Trail), are no longer in the closure area.
– CSS is open for Site Flying. All Airspace above the modified closure area (east of Hwy 18) is still off limits, so there will be no XC flying eastbound. You CAN & MAY fly WEST.
– You can read the full forrest closure order (updated) here.
– I will post the closure area map below, but here is the link.
October 2, 2024 at 3:16 PM #21055October 2, 2024 at 3:38 PM #21056Some additional clarification:
– Don’t fly east of where Hwy 18 goes up-mountain from San Bernadino to Crestline. Consider it a longitude and Do Not cross to the east of it. There is still CAL FIRE aircraft activity and we will not get in their way. We also do not want the risk of anyone landing out in the fire affected zone (closure area).
– Further on the above point, DO NOT fly east and claim that you are north of Highway 18 (Rim of the World Scenic Hwy). The two risks previously sated above apply. DON’T DO IT.
– If you use a launch to the north that that leads to XC routes to the north (Blackhawk), you should be both launching and flying well clear of the closure area. Be certain that your launch and your intended flight keep you clear of the closure area and at no risk of landing out within the closure area, as long as you accomplish that there should be no issues.
– When climbing over Marshall peak or behind it and you intend to transition to the back ridge, you must stay west of Hwy 18. Notice the little dog leg at the far west limit of the closure area? That’s Panorama Point and we all typically fly right over that. I know it’s hard, but DON’T DO IT. If you can’t stay west of Hwy 18 completely then don’t attempt flying to the back ridge, stay out front!
We’ve all been given a chance to continue enjoying free flight at our club despite a major fire, don’t mess it up by attempting to skirt the rules. There will be eyes on us, so fly safely and make good choices. Even if someone lands out well clear of the closure area, that can still have negative implications if a rescue is required. Have fun, but let’s keep it low-key and not take any unnecessary risks.
October 2, 2024 at 8:09 PM #21057Luke, help me find the part in the closure order where it mentions the airspace closure departing from the boundaries shown at tfr.faa.gov.
October 3, 2024 at 4:03 PM #21058Jerome DaoustGeneral MemberThis is great news for local schools and businesses, as well as for most pilots who are happy with local flying. “XC hounds” are left wanting more, but overall this is a 90% solution.
Now can we get some good conditions?
October 8, 2024 at 7:27 PM #21089Ken HowellsGeneral MemberI had a great half-hour with the PG yesterday.
Very cool that they lifted the ban on forest use early.
October 22, 2024 at 2:21 PM #21165Jerome DaoustGeneral MemberSome are wondering (blue text are links) if this still needs to be observed, hoping these statements will absolve them:
- Line fire is out: Mostly true, since the status is 98% containment.
- No current TFR to the East: True (according to SkyVector).
- SB Natl Forest closure does not control airspace: Conceptually true, but Luke (board member) states we need to stay West of Hwy 18.
We should keep in mind that:
- Forest closures are independent of current fires and TFR’s, and more based on risk of new fires along with available resources to combat them.
- We want to stay in good terms with the forest service. While airspace may not be controlled by them, a landing and rescue within a closed area can be detrimental to our relationship. One pilot’s desire to exercise his “rights” can jeopardize school operations and launches staying open for all.
I prefer to keep it simple and follow club rules, as fun can still be had.
October 22, 2024 at 5:53 PM #21168Mario MirallesGeneral MemberThank you for the clarification, Jerome.
October 22, 2024 at 7:05 PM #21169Thomas MayGeneral MemberAlso, to follow up on Jerome’s point, while the forest service does control over our launches. They can prohibit launches from their land in the interest of fire fighting if we are being a nuience.
I personally think our club’s compliance with the informal understanding Luke developed with the forest service is better than any kind of formal measure by the forest service.
October 23, 2024 at 8:34 AM #21171Unfortunately, it wasnt put forth as a decision for individuals to make.
It was presented as an order, Its too bad that the BOD didnt determine it to be overreaching especially considering there are 2 so called loyers on the board. Unfortunately, there may be uninformed pilots out there who may not know that the CSS BOD does not holds the authority to impose such a restriction, regardless of how much sense it makes to Jerome.
Now, had this supposed proposition been put forth as voluntary action, I’d bet there would be virtually 100 percent compliance. However, that wasnt the case.
October 23, 2024 at 1:16 PM #21172** Jerome, thanks for the update and links. All of this data is current and valid. **
The NFS closure is still in effect and remains unchanged. We will continue to respect that closure and not fly east of HWY 18.
This was not a decision of any individuals, and it is presented as an order because it IS an ORDER from a federal agency. If anyone is doubtful about that they can review the document again: (the word ORDER is right in the title) https://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/fseprd1208071.pdf
The CSS BOD did not impose a restriction, the NFS Order did that. Our launches are on NFS land and we will respect that organization’s efforts to handle forest fire management. If you disagree with NFS orders then you are free to contact that agency and voice your concerns. If you disagree with the disparity between posted FAA TFRs and NFS closure maps you are also free to voice your concerns with those agencies respectively. If you feel your rights to go fly and have fun have been violated during a time of emergency, go hire an attorney and file a suit against the NFS and the FAA (good luck with that).
Meanwhile, CSS members are still able to utilize launches, fly (with minor limitations), and train at the AJX LZ… all while respecting the agencies that are trying to protect our natural resources, private property, and human lives.
As soon as the NFS modifies the closure map or rescinds the order we will update the membership. I actually expect this to happen toward the end of the month.
November 13, 2024 at 7:21 PM #21308Mid NOV Update:
I’ve been checking in on the status of the Line Fire and NFS Closure Order every few days. I had anticipated a modification of the closure map around the 1st of November but that didn’t happen.
I checked in with NFS Administrators and there appears to be no talk or known effort to modify the closure map before the current order expiration date of 30 NOV. With that date only just over 2 weeks away it appears that the SB NFS Supervisor intends to go the full span of the closure period.
We can still fly, and many people have been flying the past few weeks west of the 18 with few incidents (a visiting pilot violated the closure order and claimed ignorance), and pilots are having great flights despite the closure and limits to normal routes. I do appreciate the cooperation and supportive nature of CSS Club Members.
December 1, 2024 at 10:13 AM #21376David WebbGeneral MemberI didn’t see any extensions of the FS closure, so assuming it’s game on again?
Can anyone snap their fingers and give us good conditions?
December 2, 2024 at 5:29 AM #21377Tom SwansonGeneral MemberYesterday was pretty good, and it looks like it will be the rest of the week. After an hour and a half, I was the only one flying, got bored, and landed. Thanks to Gene for the ride to launch.
December 4, 2024 at 11:06 PM #21381Hey CSS Members.
I just got back to the U.S. from flying trip to Oz. There are no superseding orders or amendments to the previous closure order, so it is expired as of 1 December 2024.
I will double check with the Superintendent’s Office tomorrow morning, but I’m pretty certain we are free to fly without restriction. I’ll update this thread with results, but I think we are fine either way.
