I hiked into the windsock on top of Cloud Peak. It looks like no one has been out there for years. The trail in is gone, completely over grown. The windsock tower and head is in good condition. I would like to donate a new, replacement windsock for Cloud. Question, does the club have the size of the windsock head on file? If so, could/would someone reply with the size and I will order a replacement sock.
Thank you for your time

November 8, 2024 at 9:21 AM #21258The last size I had on record for Cloud Peak was: 18″ X 60″. Items you’ll need to change out the windsock.
30′ rope to lower pole down. 7/16″ wrenches to unbolt hinge plate. Side cutter pliers. SS tie wraps to attach sock to frame (Harbor Freight). 3-in-1 oil for bolts. Small channel locks & 1-2 helpers to help lower down the pole to the ground so you can install new windsock.

November 8, 2024 at 4:30 PM #21262Lyle AndersonGeneral MemberThank you Jeff for the information. The access trail is first on the list. Long ago, when I was younger, I was on a crew that built helipads and fire attack trails in the Hualapai mountains AZ. As to help…for now, it’s me. I think Alex will help. So, OK. I will start looking for a 18×60 sock. Thank you again for the information. Mark, those are some great photos and great people. How many years ago were they taken?
As to flying safe, I have been flying for 55 years. I started with bamboo and plastic. I hope to fly my T-2 on my 70th birthday.

November 8, 2024 at 6:11 PM #21264Our friends Dusty & Cathy Rhodes were also a big help on that project as well.
You may want to take a machete for brush clearing on the way to the windsock pole. PG pilots can launch off the side of Cloud afterwards, if one choses to help.

November 13, 2024 at 11:35 AM #21303Tim WardGeneral MemberI find a good sharp set of loppers to be good for up to maybe 1 1/2 inch branches. There is, or was, a pretty sharp folding saw on Gracie for larger stuff.
November 14, 2024 at 11:08 AM #21309Iaroslav RastryginGeneral MemberI left a 16×60″ windsock at the LZ, near the light switch boxes . Feel free to use it; I would volunteer to help set this up, depending on date and time you’re going to do this .
November 14, 2024 at 4:27 PM #21312Lyle AndersonGeneral MemberWOW, GREAT! Thank you Sir. I will go pick it up. I am still going to order another windsock. They are only good for a year or two at best. So that way, there will be a replacement ready to go when needed. Thanks Tim for the offer of tools. I have loppers, and I am sharpening up my machete…
November 14, 2024 at 4:58 PM #21313Lyle AndersonGeneral MemberAndy smiles. I have a lot of “There I was, thought I was going to DIE stories!” I read the article in I think it was Popular Science? And I was hooked. I am self taught. So, I found/put myself in situations that caused moments of intense and extreme pucker factor! People coming into the sport now, both HG&PG are so fortunate to have both certified equipment, instructors and the vast amount of knowledge and experience they have to impart. To my knowledge, there are no killer wings anymore. Yes, some are easier/harder to fly, but back in the day there were wings that were flat out deadly due to design flaws.
Get high,fly fast, go far…
November 15, 2024 at 8:00 AM #21314Yeah I remember standing in my backyard watching you launch Edward’s.. then fly right back *into* launch in an amazingly fast succession. I left my house to see what happened and you were in great spirits. Hope the couple teeth went back in OK, but overall nice fly into the wall landing.
Anyway I read your write up in post above and kinda figured this was one of those times.
November 15, 2024 at 10:04 AM #21315Like Jeff said: “helpers to help lower down the pole to the ground”.
I didn’t have help once and the pole went into free fall and mashed the cage.
That required removal and repair adding additional days to the sock replacement.
You only want to visit That place once!
There is a New replacement sock locked up in storage at the shade structure.
Here are the specs for the other windsocks:
Cloud: 18 inch dia
Marshall: 24 inch dia
The 750: 18 inch dia
(part numbers from aircraft spruce)November 18, 2024 at 1:47 AM #21327Lyle AndersonGeneral MemberThank you. I picked up the orange windsock. But I think I got my wires crossed. The information I am receiving is that the sock on Cloud is an 18in. I have placed an order for an 18in x 60 sock, and I added a 2 year replacement warranty on the sock too.
Thanks again to all who have replied.
Andy
