Thanks to Jerome for applying some de-haze magic to the original photo. :)

Nice landing! I had that very same LZ picked out if I decided not to cross the valley, but finally found a small climb just on the other side of the dam.

Looks like many of us had exciting launches, and I threw in an exciting landing as well – excitement sandwich. The rest of my flight was very mellow. Battled the wind right off of launch, but got a nice climb up to 7400′ at Marshall and everything smoothed way out for the rest of the trip. Less wind above 5k. Nice tailwind made for pleasant drifting downrange, with a few decent climbs on the way. After crossing to Crafton and setting my sights on the athletic fields by the brewery, I abandoned that idea due to the increasing headwinds. On a different day I had it on glide but not this one. Winds and sink increased the lower and closer I got to my LZ and ended up coming up a little short. Got to study the local plant life a little but still was a soft, vertical touchdown. Also thanks to Steve for the retrieve, and there was complimentary beef jerky (more than I get on an airplane).

    Track log here.

That would mean I’d need to pick up hang gliding and start hanging out with the bad kids though. My mom wouldn’t approve.

I was grinding it out at Pine and watched with envy your and Mario’s seemingly infinite glide back from the pass.

Yep – ice is another matter, but that one has been giving incorrect readings since before we started icing up this season. The Edison station froze up for a day or so this last week, but seems to be thawed out again. Once we get the club station connected back up, it also has an ultrasonic anemo that is a bit more resistant to ice.

Thanks to Jerome for the photo shoot :).  Here’s my favorite of the day, with the full moon:

Also got to enjoy a snow launch from Crestline at 9AM, with smooth, mellow conditions and light ridge soaring on the back (before everything went all east). Was still cold enough that nothing got wet while setting up.

I believe I will need someone else of consequence to request excellent conditions then. I will go postal if I have to wait that long.

I didn’t see any extensions of the FS closure, so assuming it’s game on again?

Can anyone snap their fingers and give us good conditions?

Since the proposed change would likely mean additional and lower air traffic over their land, including all of the noise/pollution/visual/etc impacts that go along with that, does anyone have any contacts at San Manuel to ask for their involvement? Might help.

I wonder if this change would also mean that more of the approaches coming in over Billboard would be even lower.

Also, under the “Regulatory Analyses” section near the end, seems like the author was being a bit glib about this proposed change’s impact being “so minimal.” Seems like a “nothing to see here, let’s just pass this thing.”

Yuck – looks like quite negative implications both for us and Redlands Airport. Perhaps we can work together to make these impacts known to FAA.

Wow – found that challenging to read, but looks like the most relevant section seems to be this:

    https://www.federalregister.gov/d/2024-23497/p-25

Would move the northern boundary of SBD’s Class D a third of a mile north, which I think puts it right through Harrison & McK, no? Didn’t measure it on a map yet, but maybe someone can parse that better than I can. The rest of it seems like a non-issue, but the northern boundary moving further north might impact flights east in addition to landing-out options depending on where the line ends up.

Is it appropriate for any/all of us to add comments to this (public-posted comments here: https://www.regulations.gov/document/FAA-2024-2055-0001/comment), or would it be preferable for the boardies to draft a statement or reach out on our behalf?
