I believe I will need someone else of consequence to request excellent conditions then. I will go postal if I have to wait that long.
David WebbGeneral MemberI didn’t see any extensions of the FS closure, so assuming it’s game on again?
Can anyone snap their fingers and give us good conditions?
David WebbGeneral MemberSold!
David WebbGeneral MemberSince the proposed change would likely mean additional and lower air traffic over their land, including all of the noise/pollution/visual/etc impacts that go along with that, does anyone have any contacts at San Manuel to ask for their involvement? Might help.
David WebbGeneral MemberI wonder if this change would also mean that more of the approaches coming in over Billboard would be even lower.
Also, under the “Regulatory Analyses” section near the end, seems like the author was being a bit glib about this proposed change’s impact being “so minimal.” Seems like a “nothing to see here, let’s just pass this thing.”
David WebbGeneral MemberYuck – looks like quite negative implications both for us and Redlands Airport. Perhaps we can work together to make these impacts known to FAA.
David WebbGeneral MemberWow – found that challenging to read, but looks like the most relevant section seems to be this:
https://www.federalregister.gov/d/2024-23497/p-25
Would move the northern boundary of SBD’s Class D a third of a mile north, which I think puts it right through Harrison & McK, no? Didn’t measure it on a map yet, but maybe someone can parse that better than I can. The rest of it seems like a non-issue, but the northern boundary moving further north might impact flights east in addition to landing-out options depending on where the line ends up.
Is it appropriate for any/all of us to add comments to this (public-posted comments here: https://www.regulations.gov/document/FAA-2024-2055-0001/comment), or would it be preferable for the boardies to draft a statement or reach out on our behalf?
October 18, 2024 at 7:33 AM in reply to: Friendly reminder: TFR still in effect for Line Fire #21114David WebbGeneral MemberLooks like the fire closure area is still the same, but I see that the Big Bear TFR has been shrunk by quite a bit (its western edge is now east of the dam). That’s forward progress.
David WebbGeneral MemberCost arguments aside, the turf / grass combo approach seems like a great compromise that solves a few problems all at once:
- less grass to water and mow
- more water for the rest of the grass
- larger turf packing area
- clean area for kiting (easier on wings)
David WebbGeneral MemberSecond Jérôme’s report. Smoother than normal with a few stronger climbs that felt like nothing at all.

Also, a small fire SW of the site that started and appeared to have been brought under control while we were in the air:
Bonus “tagged the casino” proof:
David WebbGeneral MemberSpooky season price drop: now only $1100.
David WebbGeneral MemberYep – they are hangie friendly. There is a newer launch right next to where the 4×4 stops so no need to Ironman your gear up the hill by hand. Massive runway-style LZ.
Few of us enjoyed nice flights with great weather yesterday (9/15). I got 2.5 hours in and maxed out at just over 5k. Only about a half dozen of us in the air.
The flight park cats also offer free gear inspections:
David WebbGeneral MemberTFR now in effect:
David WebbGeneral MemberOuch – 117F at 3:20 today, according to the AJX Wx.
David WebbGeneral MemberNice shots, Tom. Fun boating around with you all on a Monday.
