General MemberHail, Albert. Takes guts to climb that ladder.

General MemberI’m definitely not knowledgeable on the topic, but I frequently see discussions about this pointing to the following Cloudbase Mayhem article. Seems fairly comprehensive and was updated earlier this year:

General MemberFor those that have downloaded this already, you may way to remove it and download again (using the link above, which I updated). Small tweak so it works better when your screen is locked (better behavior if you’re using it in the car).

General MemberAm definitely not there everyday, so can’t comment from a local’s perspective, but the last few times I’ve been, I haven’t noticed any significant flying insect annoyances – mosquito or otherwise. There was one day on Marshall launch which people experienced a black fly swarm of Biblical proportions, but seems like that was an out-of-the-blue weird occurrence.
Knock on wood, I haven’t seen any tick activity around AJX or the launches since I’ve been flying here.

General MemberOther note: it currently only returns 8-point compass direction for wind direction, but I will soon be updating the data to use 16 instead (so you’d get all of the SSW, NNE, etc directions). Coming soon.

General MemberBump on this topic, for anyone that isn’t seeing how to start new topics (see the first post above).

General MemberThanks to Jerome for applying some de-haze magic to the original photo. :)
Nice landing! I had that very same LZ picked out if I decided not to cross the valley, but finally found a small climb just on the other side of the dam.

General MemberLooks like many of us had exciting launches, and I threw in an exciting landing as well – excitement sandwich. The rest of my flight was very mellow. Battled the wind right off of launch, but got a nice climb up to 7400′ at Marshall and everything smoothed way out for the rest of the trip. Less wind above 5k. Nice tailwind made for pleasant drifting downrange, with a few decent climbs on the way. After crossing to Crafton and setting my sights on the athletic fields by the brewery, I abandoned that idea due to the increasing headwinds. On a different day I had it on glide but not this one. Winds and sink increased the lower and closer I got to my LZ and ended up coming up a little short. Got to study the local plant life a little but still was a soft, vertical touchdown. Also thanks to Steve for the retrieve, and there was complimentary beef jerky (more than I get on an airplane).

General MemberThat would mean I’d need to pick up hang gliding and start hanging out with the bad kids though. My mom wouldn’t approve.

General MemberI was grinding it out at Pine and watched with envy your and Mario’s seemingly infinite glide back from the pass.

General MemberGit ’em!

General MemberYep – ice is another matter, but that one has been giving incorrect readings since before we started icing up this season. The Edison station froze up for a day or so this last week, but seems to be thawed out again. Once we get the club station connected back up, it also has an ultrasonic anemo that is a bit more resistant to ice.

General MemberThanks to Jerome for the photo shoot :). Here’s my favorite of the day, with the full moon:
Also got to enjoy a snow launch from Crestline at 9AM, with smooth, mellow conditions and light ridge soaring on the back (before everything went all east). Was still cold enough that nothing got wet while setting up.

General MemberAaaaaaaaand sold.

General MemberI believe I will need someone else of consequence to request excellent conditions then. I will go postal if I have to wait that long.
