Major Upgrade to the RASP model viewer.
As some of you may know, GoogleMaps shifted to a paid service about a year ago. More recently they required a version upgrade. If you’ve been trying to use the RASP maps it’s been pretty ugly with a “development purposes only” banner.
These hot days have been good for one thing, I’ve implemented Darren’s OpenStreetMap replacement viewer. The model underneath hasn’t changed, but it’s free of any reliance on GoogleMaps.

Enjoy,

Alan CrouseGeneral MemberOk, gotta ask… “This one can also be passed a date to give you dates in the past or in the future, and a station name to give you only data for a specific station”. So it ties into some predictive algorithm for the future dates or ??
:-)
Alan CrouseGeneral MemberI think I was thrown off by the relatively small 8’s in the diagram. In Stephen’s great looking approach, he goes east almost to the training hill, expanding the area covered by almost 50%. In Jana’s description, she mentions going west to the white fence.
The relatively small 8’s in the diagram seem to imply a rapid maneuver, or lower speed (I think). Maybe I’m still off base somehow…
Thank you,
Alan
Alan CrouseGeneral MemberDo we really want the figure 8’s as depicted? Shouldn’t the PG’s be doing a nice smooth DBF as well? I have seen a dusty take out a PG low in the area described in the diagram (broken bones).
Not a PG instructor so others may have better knowledge, but more time at low speed, close to the ground… seems like a not so good idea?
Thoughts?
Alan CrouseGeneral MemberAs info, the Windgrams and RASP data use NAM data for initialization and a specialized version of the WRF model (WRF plus secret sauce from Dr Jack) to reduce the grid. The “North” and “South” RASP models are 1.5km grids.

Perhaps a poll? You have had feedback from various sources that individual posters will not have heard. A couple of thoughts:
a) some forums restricted to only forum members (current proposal);
b) most (except member discussions) forums open, but names suppressed unless you are a forum member;
c) use of pseudonyms for posts, but forum members can see ‘real’ names;
d) ?
I’m sure there are more options that folks have mentioned to you.
Thank you,
Alan
Alan CrouseGeneral MemberTrying the alternate view seems much improved.
Again, THANK YOU!
Alan
Alan CrouseGeneral MemberHere are some concrete suggestions:
– Turn off the ability to reply to a specific post. This seems kind of cool, but for the occasional reader it makes finding new posts almost impossible as they can occur anywhere in the string of posts. Indeed, it is easy to miss new posts if there are some in the middle of the list (indented) and other new posts at the bottom of the list.
– Have the “latest update” reflect the most recent post, not the newest topic. Right now the forum shows the blue bar to indicate that there is unread content, but the referenced poster name and time is that of the newest topic, not the newest post.
I’ll admit up front I have no idea of whether this new website software would allow these changes, or how difficult and time consuming they might be. But as a regular reader of multiple, similar forums, these would seem to address much of the difficulty in keeping up with forum content.
Thank you for tackling a generally thankless task. The Crestline forum has always been an important part of our community and is probably even more so in the current situation.

Sorry, that wasn’t quite what I intended. A lot of pilots prefer the windgrams as they pack a lot of the RASP information into a single diagram. Could you add a SoCal Windgrams link as well? The target would be: http://flymarshall.com/socal-4k/show_windgram.php
We may as well add the SoaringPredictor link too: http://www.soaringpredictor.info/scal/SouthCalPredictor.htm
More resources :-)
Thank you,
Alan
Alan CrouseGeneral MemberI did some poking around and Gavin did the RASP as well. It is located at: http://flymarshall.com/socal-4k/
So the names are a bit off, the current resource is actually SoCal Windgrams and the link above id SoCal RASP.
I don’t have Gavin’s contact.
Alan
Alan CrouseGeneral MemberMore resources?
The “SoCal RASP” link is currently only pointed to SoCal Windgrams. Is there a new RASP model as well? Here is the older example: http://www.soaringpredictor.info/rasptable/RASPtable.html.
The really simple SoaringPredictor graphs reportedly gave a good indication of the timing for wind direction shift at Marshall/Crestline. Is this of any value? Example: http://www.soaringpredictor.info/scal/SouthCalPredictor.htm
Thank you,
Alan
