Update: as a result of member request from several of you, and a board member vote, the frequent flier offender has been banned on this forum, and their posts removed. Hopefully the first and last time I’ll have to do that. I hope we can get back to harmless casual swearing (in moderation!) and humble brags about how cold it was at 8k.

    Happy foruming.

    Updated (in the original comment).

Might be board/safety director perogative, but the incident report item might be better addressed separately? Not sure how everyone  stands on incident reports, but my hope with how they have been dealt with over the past year (post them in the forum, no names, etc) is that more pilots will report incidents and that as we become more dialed into those as a collective, that that awareness can help us all prevent future incidents. Not looking to embarrass anyone, but taking an honest look at why these things happen can benefit all of us (maybe keep all of our egos in check a bit).

Proposed forum guidelines – weigh in with edits, as you see fit:

In order to maintain a safe and open forum for all pilots to participate in, the following guidelines must be followed by all forum members:

    • Absolutely no threats of any kind – physical or otherwise.
    • Absolutely no hate speech.
    • No trolling, insults, or belittling your fellow participants.

Participants in violation of the above may have the offending post removed and receive a written warning, or be suspended/banned from forum participation altogether, depending on the frequency or severity of the infraction.

That doesn’t seem like a lot to digest or that it’s heavy-handed to me, but anyone can feel free to make suggestions. As was said before – this is simple stuff that would get you banned anywhere else, so I don’t see how we’re the exception. I’m not looking to review and moderate every single post, so if we all agree to the above, anyone can feel free to either mention it in the forum or email info@crestlinesoaring.org to report it. If there are major objections to this path and y’all want someone else to run the site, also speak up – it belongs to the club and I’m not going to stand in anyone’s way.

Since when does an unscheduled touch down in the bushes (especially when there was ample time and opportunity to make a perfectly good LZ) count as a landing? Does hitting the ground under reserve count too? Does “landing” a plane in the ocean count? Incidents are incidents – shit that happened that should not have happened during the normal course of flight. Are you super offended by me calling it a crash? That’s fine – suggest another noun to use and I’ll change it.

I’ve attempted to report all incidents here that I’m made aware of for purposes of pilot and club education – if you’re that offended by seeing incident reports, don’t come on the forum. If you’re that offended by seeing folks post information about COVID, don’t come on the forum.

Maybe the web just isn’t for you cause you have gotten SUPER heated about some topics on here and I think most folks just don’t give a shit about your opinion on those things. Perhaps we all want to get back to bragging about our flights or complaining about the north winds. I sure do.

Completely agree. Just like threats and violence wouldn’t be tolerated in the LZ, so should it go here as well. When every post turns out to be an insult, threat, or conspiracy theory about the club, that’s a drain on the group and discourages others from legitimate participation.

I’ll work up a few simple guidelines for the forum for us all to review and discuss and post them here.

I don’t understand the anger, or why the need to spend energy posting here if you aren’t interested in being a part of or contributing to CSS. If it were me, I’d just focus on flying.

I’m not sure who you asked about the temp membership, but everyone has been made aware of the monthly memberships via this website, email blast, and in person (there was also a vote on a bylaw update so that we could make that change). If you have questions about any of that and don’t feel like you’re getting the answers you need from someone you’ve asked in the LZ, please email info@crestlinesoaring.org – I check that quite often and usually respond pretty quickly.

Re your tandem landing – I literally have no idea what you’re referring to. To date, I have not once yelled at anyone in the LZ (either in the air or on the ground) – I’m not a yeller, so perhaps you’re confusing me with someone else? I think you’re threatening me here for literally no reason at all, which I just don’t get.

Please refrain from the threats, even if they’re just online – we just don’t need any more of that than we already have. At the end of next week, no one has to listen to me anymore about safety related issues, since it will be the end of my term on the board (I crave that authoritarian sense of power so much that I decided not to run again), so just have patience until then.

Cool – Mitch has solved all of our problems: it is indeed LEGAL to fly a foot launch aircraft from anywhere in the San Bernardino national forest. Maybe all of the local students will start landing out in the wash or in the bushes then? Seems like a wonderful solution versus paying a small fee and landing on a huge grassy LZ.

“Easy inexpensive mechanism for any unrated non-members to acquire a 30 day temp novice membership” – this has been up for a year now. Before that, there was a day-use fee (which was $10). $20 for a month doesn’t seem out of control to me, especially for how expensive our flight gear is.

”vindictive control freak attention whoring” – that’s a super interesting position from someone that posts insults a lot on a flying club’s forum for a club to which he neither belongs nor contributes.

Just my personal opinion, and while I think that would be helpful for voters, I think we’re too late in the game to reboot the whole election. Both candidates have had a couple of months now to issue statements to the club and/or make their case, but neither have chosen to do that (perhaps they should have been encouraged to do so? Maybe that should be SOP for all future elections if there are contested seats).

There are still 2 weeks left in the election though, so maybe both candidates would like to state their position on what they hope to accomplish with their role. There are a LOT of members that still have not voted – hopefully some of those plan to do so before the 5th. Also, if the candidates make their statements and any members wish to change their vote, they are welcome to email info@crestlinesoaring.org – I can’t change (or even look at) anyone’s vote, which maintains anonymity and prevents cheating, but I can void/cancel a ballot and reissue a new one.

Anyone else, feel free to chime in on this – if there’s a sizable group that wants to do a reboot, speak up.

I don’t see how I’m attacking a group that I’m asking for assistance from, so if I was I apologize – not my intent.

Many messages have been sent to USHPA/RRRG regarding our repeat offenders (that’s one of the responsibilities of my board position), but to date, no intervention has been deemed necessary.

As far as presenting all the facts – I have the pilot’s account of the incident, and I watched the whole thing from directly above, start to finish. I have gotten no other information from anyone that contradicts what’s in the incident report. I was just sent a text stating that the instructor was on launch and on radio with the student, but due to the LONG straight path the student flew directly to terrain and a LOT of time available to pipe up on the radio and tell that student to turn away from terrain, I’m at a loss on that. Up to USHPA or someone smarter than me to figure out what’s true.

I’m also really baffled by this continued “screw USHPA and RRRG and let them cancel our insurance and who cares if the site is shut down” attitude. I see a lot of complaining about safety issues (AJ, the approach pattern, HGs getting cut off, etc), but then hear from the same people that “don’t tell me what to do” thing. You can’t have it both ways. I feel like I’ve done what I could over the past year to improve our safety record, and better our relations with USHPA (since we’re one of the problem child clubs for obvious reasons), but am definitely ready to be out of club politics. I didn’t manage to move the needle so hopefully the next one in the chair will be better at it.

If anyone has any facts to add to the report, please send them in to safety@crestlinesoaring.org. Otherwise, let’s move the “future of the club” chit chat to another thread.
