But heβs also right that you have a lot of control over how safe. Not just when to fly (thatβs true too!), but how to fly, where to fly, how close to things/others to fly, etc.. Decision making matters: More so in aviation than most other things.
Exactly what the article points out and talks about. ππ
Wise words from Stephen but I have a different view on one point: What we do is not safe and probably will never be safe.
As Stephen points out, you’re playing Russian roulette if bad decisions are made.
Humans seem to find all kinds of ways to die, even during activities which would normally be considered “safe” by most. People die driving, swimming, hiking, walking across the street, even just voicing an opinion (to the wrong person)! Before we do or say anything, we should be thinking ahead and understanding the consequences of whatever actions we plan to take. Gotta know the dangers and heed the warnings.
That’s awesome. We certainly appreciate the support! We love this site and want to keep it going for many years to come. As a non-profit organization with unpaid volunteers, we could always use as much backing as possible, so we can keep maintaining and improving the place.
Oh man, I thought I was gonna be reading a rant! π What a pleasant surprise. π
We were watching, thanks for controlling the camera to keep us on top of the action. π
No worries, do it at your own pace of course. It’s not super-duper important, just nice to have.
“Weather & Gossip” page
On mobile, it’s a bit of a hassle to look for the most recent/active topics. What I’m hearing is that people want the front page (or -a- page they can bookmark) to contain weather info AND active topics in one, the two most important things for most active members. They want their weather and gossip in one. That way they don’t have to bookmark two or three different pages to get the info they’re looking for.
The mobile page has the recent/active topics all the way at the bottom of the page, and the list of forum topics are listed twice. Also there are two forum “search” bars on the same page, which seems redundant and requires extra scrolling.
I don’t know if we can make these changes without ruining something else, but that’s what the problem for some people seems to be.
Yea, every time I see a video starting with that launch site, I think it’s the same one I’ve seen before, and then I realize this is a new one entirely. π Nobody is teaching these people to lean forward and run!
I’ve seen multiple screw-up videos from this place! Must be some awful instruction at that site.
That would be great, if only we could find a quality photo like that. I searched through my thousands of photos and could find only very few that featured both a paraglider and hang glider in one, and usually it was against a blue sky instead of Crestline. I’ll keep an eye out for that next time I’m out there taking pictures.
Fun fact: Iβve heard that we have a reserve toss simulator located near the LZ. Never seen it myself, I think itβs located on the Ranch property, but I should go check it out next time Iβm out there and report back.
Love it! π So cool to see pilots crossing over from one form of flying to another. It helps to understand the other side a little better. Wouldn’t mind someday trying hang gliding! For now I’ll keep the focus on PG. π
Here’s Nacho making the cross-over:
What a day! Stephen took me on a wild and crazy tandem adventure with his new Ozone Magnum 3. We got up from the 750 all the way up to 7,400ft. It was super cold! Thermals and gloves were no match for the elements up there. Going backwards in high winds, frontal collapse, near-miss with an airliner, spirals, wing-overs, barrel rolls,… I’ll never forget it!!! π

Here’s the full Tandem Flight Photo Gallery
Aww. Sucks when you drive out so far, but hey, it’s another flight in the log book. We were going to come out, but saw how overcast it looked on the web cam. We opted out.
Wow, awesome! Such a good feeling to get that save. π
So far I’ve only had that happen to me once, where I was getting ready to land and then found something at the last minute to take me back up to 4,000 ft. π
I had a pretty good flight Sunday myself! I got 1.5 hours and never got sick, but the sun was getting low and it got too cold for me to try and stay up longer. Here’s my GPS track
Oh….ANNNNDDD….. I was thermaling with a red tailed hawk for the very first time!!! He was so close to me at eye-level (maybe like 5 yards away) and we were doing circles together. Damn I wish I had a GoPro on my head that day. Hopefully next time! It was so magical! π¦ π
