in reply to: Tires sklashed in our LZ. What’s next, a car bomb? #18582

There is no official GoFundMe for the tire, but naturally anyone is welcome to start one if they wish.

The key to keeping the peace at the LZ is for each of us to keep calm in heated situations. It takes two people to escalate a situation. If one person is yelling at you while you’re quiet and backing up, they will eventually lose interest. If they follow you after you’ve asked them nicely to please leave you alone, that’s approaching harassment and it’s something you might want to report. If you’re the person pursuing someone who asked you to stop, consider the possible consequences of harassment. Do NOT follow anyone who has asked you to back off.

Some more aggressive types may be trying to goad you into reacting and giving them a reason to take it up a notch. Don’t give them what they want! It’s a trap. Say; “I’m sorry you feel that way. I’m going to walk away now”. I know it’s not an easy thing to do sometimes, but anything else could only make things worse, not better.

Avoiding conflict could also mean avoiding potential future vandalism of your property. Consider the history of whoever you’re speaking with and consider what you may not be privy to. Where could it lead? Maybe if feels really good to tell someone off in the moment, but think about it festering not only in your mind, but also theirs. You can’t unsay or undo what you put out there for all to see and hear.

I shouldn’t have to say it, but physical violence of any kind is UNACCEPTABLE. We don’t care what reason you give us, “He called my mom fat!” Pushing, shoving, punching, spitting, damaging personal property, etc. will not be tolerated. I encourage everyone to take videos of these incidents as they happen, so that we have a clearer picture of what actually took place.

What do we have to be so angry about at a place of leisure? I think for most of us our goals are the same,… to spend time in a place of enjoyment and to make sure it sticks around. Please do your best to reign it in. Make friends! Not enemies.

It is very unfortunate that something like this happened. It’s not a common occurrence at AJX, but we do need to put up functioning cameras aimed at the containers, the parking lot and in the LZ, for at least a little more oversight. It will hopefully not only dissuade vandals, but also catch the perpetrator in the act without having to guess or speculate as to who was responsible. We will talk about this at the meeting and we will see what we need to do to make it happen.

Currently there is no video and no physical evidence that’s been brought forward to prove who slashed the tire. If there are witnesses out there, please contact one of the board members and give us your account of the incident.

If the police was willing to investigate this vandalism (which they did not), they would also require solid proof to determine who did it. We cannot convict anyone of a crime without the necessary evidence, and we have far less training (let alone authority) than the police. All we can do is listen, talk to the parties involved to get to the bottom of it and try to implement possible preventive measures.

I’m pleading with all of you to keep your emotions in check. We should not be throwing accusations around, unless we are certain we know what happened. This wouldn’t be the first or last time that the wrong person was named as a suspect due to coincidence. We cannot have physical or verbal violence at the LZ.

This is supposed to be a friendly, professional, fun place for all! If you have nothing nice to say, just try to keep quiet and avoid unnecessary drama, especially if this is a place you come to often and must pass by those you may disagree with. It takes a lot of energy to be angry all the time. Try to focus on the positives, do what’s right, avoid conflict, de-escalate conflict instead of feeding into it. Be the better, more rational person if you have to. Show up, say hello (or don’t), go flying, land, pack up, go home, be happy. Isn’t that what this place is all about, to de-stress from the every-day struggles of home and work life? Let’s leave that negativity behind.

I know that instructors have a different relationship to AJX. This IS their workplace! There may be some rivalry, but there’s plenty of work for everyone involved, so let’s try to get along. We should all be working on making AJX an awesome experience for visitors and pilots, not a place of crazy, awkward drama. Raised voices, name-calling, pushing around, all of that is very bad for business, unless we start taping a reality TV show. ;-)

in reply to: CSS Board Meeting Minutes – May 2023 #18360

There is no pettiness involved in this temporary decision. Simply-put, Gene just needed to get current on his club membership. Now that he’s current, his phone number will be put back on the rides page.

Sandy has been paying her CSS club membership all these years, even though she is not a pilot. Dale has been paying his membership, even though he barely ever flies anymore (though he is hoping to get back into it soon). She volunteers her time, money & effort frequently without complaint, and that is why her number remains on the rides page.

There are many other volunteers who also pay their memberships, not expecting anything in return.

I hope everyone here knows that the club membership funds go right back into site maintenance, not into anyone’s pocket. That includes gas and maintenance for the tractor(?) “Gracie”.

Let’s all make sure that we stay current with our USHPA and CSS club memberships, and don’t forget to update your profiles with your correct USHPA numbers, so they don’t appear in red in the current members list, looking expired.

in reply to: CSS Board Meeting Minutes – May 2023 #18352

Darren is a local pilot. I let him know that he needs to renew his USHPA ASAP. He’s good on CSS membership until tomorrow, but I reminded him to renew that as well.

in reply to: Camping has been suspended until further notice. #18077

We still want to explore camping options, but first we need to reach out to DWR and make it very clear to them that we do not want public camping in the traditional sense, rather a CSS club members only type of overnight camping. We will let everyone know how that works out, if & when it does.

in reply to: Camping has been suspended until further notice. #18072

Our lease prohibits camping. The lease can be found in the club library, if anyone would like to read it. You have to be logged in to have access to the club library: DWR Lease Docs

The last communication this club has had (with one of the DWR people currently in charge, something that changes every five years or so) in regard to camping, stated that camping was not allowed. Therefore we cannot have any official club-endorsed camping at this time.

Although over the years the DWR has been very lenient with us (since we’re such well-behaved lease holders), part of the CSS board’s position is that it’s not worth risking our very inexpensive lease in exchange for camping revenue. -Officially- we should not be encouraging overnight parking at AJX.

in reply to: New BOD ! #17919

I want to thank everyone who gave me a chance to hopefully do something positive for the club.

I’m not perfect, we may even disagree on certain topics, but I’ll do my best to listen and keep everyone in the loop about important topics regarding the future of the club.

I have no animosity toward the 2022 BOD, I’m sure they meant well and had some good ideas, we’d just like to do things a little different this year.

We hope to have more events, stay up-to-date with meeting minutes, and give members a fair opportunity to volunteer and help make AJX a nice place to fly.

Please keep in mind that the BOD is made up of pilots who love AJX. If you disagree with something we’re doing, let us know and we’ll try to address it. We don’t get paid for this, we have feelings & sometimes stressful life circumstances outside the club, so please try to be patient with us, if you can. 😅

Looking forward to a great flying season and working with you all. 😎🤘🏻

in reply to: Associate Membership #17605

Being able to buy membership quickly via a website is a relatively new perk, so there are still a few wrinkles to work out. Having a monitor was discussed many times, but I can’t remember the exact reason  why we don’t have one. Maybe someone else who knows better can chime in.

I’ll put it out there that if anyone is willing to volunteer to be a monitor on busy weekends, especially in summer, I don’t think there will be much opposition to it.

in reply to: Associate Membership #17603

A lot of people bought the Associate membership without having a spouse or family member who was already a General member. So, instead of paying the $100-$125 yearly General membership like they were supposed to, they’d pay $50 and call it good. It got to the point where we had around 30 Associate members, of whom only like 5 were legitimate.

I don’t know exactly when it was removed from the website. It’s possible that it might still be available, but you have to prove you live in the same household as a General member.

in reply to: Associate Membership #17601

As far as I know, the Associate membership was for spouses and family members living under the same roof, only. For example if you, or Heather, had a General membership, the other person would be able to join the club as an Associate member for half the price.

Unfortunately there was a lot of abuse of this membership by people who did not have a spouse or family member with a General membership, so there was discussion of either finding a way to make sure this rule was followed, or the Associate membership gotten rid of. There would have to be a way to verify each person as a spouse or family member of a General member.

I’m not on the Board currently, so I don’t know all the details, but that’s what I suspect happened with it. Maybe it’s just temporary until they figure out a better way to implement it on the website. 🤷‍♀️

One of these days we’ll learn from (some of) our mistakes. 😜

in reply to: CSS Board Meeting Videos, March 18th, 2023 #17551

No problem! Now everyone can feel like they were there. 😄

PGs could practically land anywhere if they’re skilled enough, but HGs have more speed and sometimes require more runway. It’s harder for them to go to plan B during the last stretch. Of course there are other considerations for keeping the ranch as part of the LZ that have little to do with the landing part.

If anyone were to ask me what side I’m on, personally I just want to see this flying site preserved for decades to come. If I get the feeling that something, or someone is threatening its existence, I want to know how to stop it. The only way to figure that out is by putting all of our heads together and start brainstorming & getting the facts straight.

If we’re going to make big decisions, we need to understand all the possible consequences and have a back-up plan already in place to remedy any problems we might encounter as a result. Saying “Don’t worry! Everything will be fine! We’ll figure it out afterwards!” is not what I would call a solid back-up plan. 🤷‍♀️ If there is one in place, I’m not clear on those details. Where can I see it, or read about it?
