David Webb General MemberDefinitely qualified as my smoothest Soboba experience to date. Felt like coastal ridge soaring, and much of the afternoon there was a nice lift band out over the road that covered the whole local part of the range. Light, easy flying with no need for extra layers (comfy t-shirt weather). Maxed out at 5900′ and got 2 1/2 hours in.

David Webb General MemberHi Billie,
I just looked in the member directory, and it looks like you’re paid up until July next year (2024). 2 weeks before your renewal, you’ll get a nag email with a link to renew. If you want to renew before that email gets to you, there’s a page under your account that shows your “subscriptions,” with a button to renew it.
David Webb General MemberAwesome flight.
David Webb General MemberDamn – I thought the subtle spelling change was enough to fool the anti-spider, pro-human contingent. Will have to adjust strategy accordingly…
David Webb General MemberI for one, welcome our new spider overlords. I pray my loyalty will be rewarded in due time.
David Webb General MemberThrow in an extra glamour shot of billboard:

David Webb General MemberDefinitely a day of A+ Soboba conditions.
Hiked up in sunny but pleasant weather, and enjoyed a neatly-trimmed and cleared trail along the last stretch to launch (kudos to Jerome and others at Soboba for their efforts).
After taking the Soboba express up the face, played a nice game of follow the leader, with almost a complete crossing of the valley to the hills to the west (farthest I’ve ever pushed out there). Fun flying the flats and using the clouds. Copious amounts of smooth easy climbs everywhere and the standard “can’t get down” boatiness at sunset. A nice third flight on my new pod, which has my endorsement.
David Webb General MemberMy 2 cents regarding the discussion topic of bringing back the cash box and why I think that’s not a good idea:
The primary reason presented to me when we redid the website was to get a handle on HG storage ownership and our membership roster (who’s current and who’s not). If it’s all electronic like it is now, the record of all that is always up to date and real-time. Going back to partially electronic and partially paper/cash puts an end to that. Especially since I see that there’s also discussion of bringing on site monitor or security volunteers (no argument here on that) – their job would be impossible as they’d have no reliable way to verify someone if they paid in cash and the directory not updated.
We have consistently over 300 general members, plus quite a few temporaries, and 99% of those have zero issues signing up or renewing with no instruction, coaching, or additional help. Less than half a dozen per year ask for assistance or make an oopsie while paying (bad card number, mistyped, brain fart, whatever) and those are quickly resolved. As far as speed goes, I’ve renewed the last couple of years literally in less time than it takes to wash my hands – takes only as long as it takes to type my card number and expiration date (if you use a password manager, you’d be done in even less time since it would take a click or maybe 2). We’ve all learned how to fly aircraft, so buying something online should be a snap in comparison.
The cash box would also mean the treasurer is back to making bank runs to deposit cash – if Jeff enjoys that then more power to him (I don’t love going to the bank, but maybe that’s weird).
Since we have a waiver that has to be acknowledged before signing up, even if that’s submitted with the cash payment – is that really going to be stored in a file cabinet somewhere? Seems impractical. If it’s electronic, that stuff is backed up and no one has to wonder where it is.
Unrelated to the cash box – a suggestion to put the word out or maybe a sign or something to keep the (super nice) turf packing area clear for people to pack up their gear. It seems that it’s become a nice place to park chairs on to watch people land, which I get (good view of the LZ from there), but that also limits its usefulness for its intended purpose. Just moving the chairs just off the edge of the turf is enough and would still offer great views.
Thanks for the meeting updates.

David Webb General MemberAre you selling because you’re ordering out for Pizza? :)
David Webb General MemberNice flight. Like the new camera angles.

David Webb General MemberThank you, sir!
Progress on the way back was definitely slow (felt like I was at Harrison for ages, which was likely just mental), but the small clouds popping off in front of the range kept giving up the goods. I ventured further south than I wanted to be, but once I started getting close to McK, I wanted to give the res a wide birth. Lots of good landing options there, but obviously a no-no. I didn’t see a lot of good options up against terrain between the casino and Arrowhead, but the track I ended up choosing in that section had big field after big field so it gave me a lot of choices. Also was keeping a close watch on the SBD airspace border just south of me, which after review, turned out to be a bit farther away than I thought it was at the time so no problem there.
Pretty satisfying flight.
David Webb General MemberThis one was taken at Crestline launch yesterday afternoon:

Also, as we were driving out of AJX yesterday morning to head up to Crestline (around 8:30), we drove right by a good size rattler out on the main dirt road – almost ran over it.
David Webb General MemberWhen we rebuilt the website, there was no digital version of any of the previous meeting agendas or minutes (at least, none that I knew about), so the ones posted began after the new site went up. If anyone has old agendas or minutes kicking around in their junk drawers, or any from other recent months that are missing, send them to info@crestlinesoaring.org and they can be added to the club library.
