The Forest Service says CSS’ SUP is solely for recreation, so it does not qualify for the business exemption.  Unfortunately, they made it clear that we are not exempt.

Correction to the launch list above.  The XC Ranch informed us that the 350 launch is not open.

A point of clarification on the business exemption.  The Forest Service has clarified that the business exemption in the closure order is only for those businesses that hold a Special Use Permit (“SUP”) from the Forest Service.  Those businesses that do not have a SUP are not exempt from the closure.

    Dear Arjun:

Yes, the closure affects all launches, except the 350′.  You can coordinate with info@crestlinesoaring.org on how to adjust your membership and pass.

Jerome, what I said is absolutely correct.  The CSS Board did not choose to drop USHPA Chaptership ever.  The only thing the CSS Board did was to change insurance providers.   If CSS is no longer a USHPA Chapter, that was solely USHPA’s sole doing.

It should last because I bought an airport-quality windsock, which I donated to the club.  Enjoy!

The Board is not being secretive in any way.  Additionally, there have not been any Board meetings since April because no Board decisions have been made since.  I don’t understand where these rumors are coming from, but they are untrue.  The Board has not been planning or considering getting out of USHPA, changing the rating system, or obtaining another rating provider.  Each and every one of these decisions would have to be made beforehand by a vote of the entire club membership.  Additionally, that vote would only occur after the Board decides to put it to a vote.  Neither a single Board member nor a minority of Board members can force a vote or make such decisions.  This club is entirely democratic, which I staunchly uphold.  There is no rule by one or a select few.  Nor is there secrecy.  Just because a few Board members discuss potential ways to advance freeflight and improve our club does not mean the Board is being secretive.  Just because ideas are bantered around does not mean that important club decisions are going to be made against the will of the members.  Rest assured that cannot, and will not, happen.

The Board is in the process of determining when the next Board meeting will be held in the very near future.

Well, it’s official. The San Bernardino Forest remains closed through September 30th. https://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/fseprd810649.pdf  We need to have one heck of a party when it finally opens back up!

I just got off a call with NFS.  They expect the San Bernardino Forest closure will be extended through Wednesday, Sept. 30 because of the upcoming heatwave.  Thereafter, it should become open.  A new Regional Order will be posted on their website sometime later this evening.  I asked if there was any possibility that we could get an exception to use the Crestline launch.  Their response was that the closure extension is only for a few more days, so please be patient.

With all the launches at Andy Jackson Airpark closed due to the El Dorado Fire, I jumped at David Webb’s invitation to go to Soboba today.  It did not disappoint.  2 hour-and-16 minute flight with lift up to 705 fpm.  Got to core a strong thermal with Jerome in locked and tight synchronization.  What a rush!  Maxed out at 4,439 feet and was rewarded with glass-off smooth figure-8’s all the way down to the LZ.  What a great day!
