General MemberBut it was a beautiful day in the neighborhood.

General MemberJust my opinion, but I don’t see anything wrong with letting anyone in the flying community post here. As long as we can all behave ourselves, I think there’s value in letting folks who may not fly here regularly (and might not be regular members) join in on discussions. To my knowledge, we’ve really only had an issue with a couple of people in the entire history of the site’s forum (both the old one and the current one) – that’s actually surprisingly good.

General MemberNow THAT’s a sunset! Nice pic.

General MemberI’m jealous!

General MemberSorry – I just don’t see what dragging it out accomplishes? I want everyone to be included and participate, and I take the censorship thing very seriously, but 3 strikes for posting in a forum is more than enough. This isn’t a case of someone blurting something out and then regrettting saying the moment after. There is ample opportunity between getting mentally fired up, typing out a reply, and clicking “Submit” to exercise a little self control. I think the fact that this is the first instance since the new website went live that anyone has even considered banning a person from the forum is testament to just how open it is. I’ve only heard of one other instance on the old site where this was necessary and I’ve yet to see any posts from any other participants (no matter how much I might disagree with them) that made me think “ban this person.”

General MemberI still advocate the 3 strikes rule, and think it’s a good compromise. There is definitely a difference between “colorful language” and repeatedly dragging down the rest of the forum with insults and threats. There has to be a limit and if a warning followed by a 30 day suspension aren’t reaching that individual, then it’s likely that they have no intention of changing their ways. This forum has got to be welcoming and usable by as many in the community as possible.

General MemberBump on this thread – results shown in the main post above.

General MemberIt was proposed that we add to the guidelines above a 3 strikes rule:
- First offense is a warning (and depending on the severity, may result in the post being removed)
- Second offense results in a 30 day forum ban
- Third strike – permanent ban
What does everyone think of that?

General MemberAgree completely. I think reducing conflicts of interest would be best for all involved (businesses, members, students, and visitors).

General MemberUpdate: if it’s the word “crash” that’s causing tempers to flare, I changed the title. A peace offering to the flight gods in hopes that cooler heads may prevail.

General MemberSorry you feel that way. I apologize to anyone who feels like they’re getting bashed or targeted. I made a pitiful attempt this year to improve the club’s safety record and image in the flying community (and with USHPA), so hopefully it’s nothing but blue skies after Friday with the new guy.
Again, I’d encourage anyone to send along relevant facts to safety@crestlinesoaring.org and they will be incorporated into the report.
Safe flying.

General MemberI don’t know what that will accomplish now? I’d prefer any changes/modifications/requests to include in the report in writing – email or a reply on the forum is perfectly fine.
As I said before – on Friday, this is going to be the next safety director’s purview. If that person would like to amend, change, discount, or void out the report that I’ve put forth, they are welcome to do that. Otherwise, I’m open to any new facts that folks in-the-know have and want to include.

General MemberMy attempts to reach them have mostly failed (for my entire year in this position). Not sure if my emails are getting lost on the internet or simply being ignored. That instructor (and anyone else that has relevant information) is welcome and encouraged to reach out to safety@crestlinesoaring.org. Open door here.
I received information directly from the pilot and from others who have spoken to the instructor. Have also spoken to USHPA and RRRG who have done their own interviews. Hopefully that is sufficient? Also, I don’t have any conflicting business interests with any of the instructors – I’m not in the instruction or flight business, and if I’m lucky, get to fly maybe once a week or every other week. I’m not exactly out getting beers with anyone at the club either – I live in San Diego and come up to fly before jumping back in the car for a long drive home.

General MemberNot looking to start conflicts here or bash anyone. My observation (from the air) was that there was quite a bit of time for an instructor/observer to tell the pilot to turn away from terrain, if that person was observing the pilot. Minor nitpick about the club membership or ushpa rating, but the club does require membership to fly here (that includes students). Since there was another similar incident with a student of the same instructor (this one was definitely unsupervised and also had no ushpa rating or club membership and they launched from Crestline which is a P3 launch), I thought those facts were with mentioning. I have no beefs with any of our instructors, but in these last couple of cases, I think we as a club can do better.

General MemberBump on this topic from last year – Stephen’s article “Don’t Let it Be You,” to review and absorb as we again look forward to the seasons changing.
Full text is here on this site, or you can check out the original on Stephen’s site.
