Agree completely. I think reducing conflicts of interest would be best for all involved (businesses, members, students, and visitors).

A peace offering to the flight gods in hopes that cooler heads may prevail.

I apologize to anyone who feels like they’re getting bashed or targeted. I made a pitiful attempt this year to improve the club’s safety record and image in the flying community (and with USHPA), so hopefully it’s nothing but blue skies after Friday with the new guy.
Again, I’d encourage anyone to send along relevant facts to safety@crestlinesoaring.org and they will be incorporated into the report.
Safe flying.
February 2, 2021 at 2:11 PM in reply to: Incident Report: PG vs Bushes Below Marshall Peak Launch, January 21, 2021 #11198David WebbGeneral MemberI don’t know what that will accomplish now? I’d prefer any changes/modifications/requests to include in the report in writing – email or a reply on the forum is perfectly fine.
As I said before – on Friday, this is going to be the next safety director’s purview. If that person would like to amend, change, discount, or void out the report that I’ve put forth, they are welcome to do that. Otherwise, I’m open to any new facts that folks in-the-know have and want to include.
February 2, 2021 at 12:56 PM in reply to: Incident Report: PG vs Bushes Below Marshall Peak Launch, January 21, 2021 #11196David WebbGeneral MemberMy attempts to reach them have mostly failed (for my entire year in this position). Not sure if my emails are getting lost on the internet or simply being ignored. That instructor (and anyone else that has relevant information) is welcome and encouraged to reach out to safety@crestlinesoaring.org. Open door here.
I received information directly from the pilot and from others who have spoken to the instructor. Have also spoken to USHPA and RRRG who have done their own interviews. Hopefully that is sufficient? Also, I don’t have any conflicting business interests with any of the instructors – I’m not in the instruction or flight business, and if I’m lucky, get to fly maybe once a week or every other week. I’m not exactly out getting beers with anyone at the club either – I live in San Diego and come up to fly before jumping back in the car for a long drive home.
February 2, 2021 at 12:17 PM in reply to: Incident Report: PG vs Bushes Below Marshall Peak Launch, January 21, 2021 #11190David WebbGeneral MemberNot looking to start conflicts here or bash anyone. My observation (from the air) was that there was quite a bit of time for an instructor/observer to tell the pilot to turn away from terrain, if that person was observing the pilot. Minor nitpick about the club membership or ushpa rating, but the club does require membership to fly here (that includes students). Since there was another similar incident with a student of the same instructor (this one was definitely unsupervised and also had no ushpa rating or club membership and they launched from Crestline which is a P3 launch), I thought those facts were with mentioning. I have no beefs with any of our instructors, but in these last couple of cases, I think we as a club can do better.
David WebbGeneral MemberBump on this topic from last year – Stephen’s article “Don’t Let it Be You,” to review and absorb as we again look forward to the seasons changing.
Full text is here on this site, or you can check out the original on Stephen’s site.
David WebbGeneral MemberUpdate: as a result of member request from several of you, and a board member vote, the frequent flier offender has been banned on this forum, and their posts removed. Hopefully the first and last time I’ll have to do that. I hope we can get back to harmless casual swearing (in moderation!) and humble brags about how cold it was at 8k.
Happy foruming.
David WebbGeneral MemberUpdated (in the original comment).
Might be board/safety director perogative, but the incident report item might be better addressed separately? Not sure how everyone stands on incident reports, but my hope with how they have been dealt with over the past year (post them in the forum, no names, etc) is that more pilots will report incidents and that as we become more dialed into those as a collective, that that awareness can help us all prevent future incidents. Not looking to embarrass anyone, but taking an honest look at why these things happen can benefit all of us (maybe keep all of our egos in check a bit).
David WebbGeneral MemberProposed forum guidelines – weigh in with edits, as you see fit:
In order to maintain a safe and open forum for all pilots to participate in, the following guidelines must be followed by all forum members:
- Absolutely no threats of any kind – physical or otherwise.
- Absolutely no hate speech.
- No trolling, insults, or belittling your fellow participants.
Participants in violation of the above may have the offending post removed and receive a written warning, or be suspended/banned from forum participation altogether, depending on the frequency or severity of the infraction.
That doesn’t seem like a lot to digest or that it’s heavy-handed to me, but anyone can feel free to make suggestions. As was said before – this is simple stuff that would get you banned anywhere else, so I don’t see how we’re the exception. I’m not looking to review and moderate every single post, so if we all agree to the above, anyone can feel free to either mention it in the forum or email info@crestlinesoaring.org to report it. If there are major objections to this path and y’all want someone else to run the site, also speak up – it belongs to the club and I’m not going to stand in anyone’s way.
David WebbGeneral MemberSince when does an unscheduled touch down in the bushes (especially when there was ample time and opportunity to make a perfectly good LZ) count as a landing? Does hitting the ground under reserve count too? Does “landing” a plane in the ocean count? Incidents are incidents – shit that happened that should not have happened during the normal course of flight. Are you super offended by me calling it a crash? That’s fine – suggest another noun to use and I’ll change it.
I’ve attempted to report all incidents here that I’m made aware of for purposes of pilot and club education – if you’re that offended by seeing incident reports, don’t come on the forum. If you’re that offended by seeing folks post information about COVID, don’t come on the forum.
Maybe the web just isn’t for you cause you have gotten SUPER heated about some topics on here and I think most folks just don’t give a shit about your opinion on those things. Perhaps we all want to get back to bragging about our flights or complaining about the north winds. I sure do.
David WebbGeneral MemberCompletely agree. Just like threats and violence wouldn’t be tolerated in the LZ, so should it go here as well. When every post turns out to be an insult, threat, or conspiracy theory about the club, that’s a drain on the group and discourages others from legitimate participation.
I’ll work up a few simple guidelines for the forum for us all to review and discuss and post them here.

January 28, 2021 at 1:01 PM in reply to: Incident Report: PG vs Bushes Below Marshall Peak Launch, January 21, 2021 #11156David WebbGeneral MemberI don’t understand the anger, or why the need to spend energy posting here if you aren’t interested in being a part of or contributing to CSS. If it were me, I’d just focus on flying.
I’m not sure who you asked about the temp membership, but everyone has been made aware of the monthly memberships via this website, email blast, and in person (there was also a vote on a bylaw update so that we could make that change). If you have questions about any of that and don’t feel like you’re getting the answers you need from someone you’ve asked in the LZ, please email info@crestlinesoaring.org – I check that quite often and usually respond pretty quickly.
Re your tandem landing – I literally have no idea what you’re referring to. To date, I have not once yelled at anyone in the LZ (either in the air or on the ground) – I’m not a yeller, so perhaps you’re confusing me with someone else? I think you’re threatening me here for literally no reason at all, which I just don’t get.
Please refrain from the threats, even if they’re just online – we just don’t need any more of that than we already have. At the end of next week, no one has to listen to me anymore about safety related issues, since it will be the end of my term on the board (I crave that authoritarian sense of power so much that I decided not to run again), so just have patience until then.
