Jerome DaoustGeneral MemberThank you for holding these meetings over Zoom (or any online method).
It greatly helps those who would have a long commute, especially on a non-flyable day.
Jerome DaoustGeneral MemberThe area immediately to the West of Billboard had unusually good lift late in the day. My theory is that the light SE wind was butting against thermal convection on the sunlit West mountain face.
Fun to see a good group able to sneak away during the week.
Jerome DaoustGeneral MemberUsing Tim as an example (and distraction), who wrote: “I was pretty spectacularly angry.”
When we are verbally aggressive and/or threatening:
- It often follows being afraid, and we feel justified…
That person “cut me off” (on the road or in the sky), now I need to “teach him a lesson”.
He insulted/threatened my wife, now he will have to deal with me. Will Smith moment. - We can be reported for harassment to USHPA. Hint: They don’t like it.
- We think “I showed him”, while in fact we turned off the receiver’s listening mode, but succeeded in leaving a lasting impression that we are cuckoo.
It feels unfair, but for all the great things we do, our worst moment can be our downfall.
Jerome DaoustGeneral MemberThis discussion seems to offer a place to react for those who have not been following the developments until recently, and focus on the dog/horse and disciplinary actions.
I like Gene and admire many of his past accomplishments. I also find the board (I am not part of it) to be acting appropriately. This is why…
In case some are still thinking that the main issue is about dogs & horses… It is not. Jana should have put in bold this paragraph she wrote…
The current CSS board is only trying to address a problem that has existed for a long time. Please keep in mind, this is not just about the dogs and horses. Much more serious issues were at hand, things that could still cause major problems for the club down the line. If it did come to that, it would put an end to the LZ for good, and it would put an end to every business on site.
We can talk here publicly about dogs & horses, but the more serious issues are best dealt at meetings or through Email to members (as was done on Oct 31).
From the meetings I attended, the board has put significant effort in trying to get Gene to realign himself with minimal consequences, and the opposite of being vindictive.
Jerome DaoustGeneral MemberIt will be challenging for visiting pilots to know where the limits are on the ground, going from memory of a map.
For those hoping to catch a ride up with Gene, we could have these temporary signs…
Jerome DaoustGeneral MemberI think the Seven Oaks dam holds water on one side and collects thermals on the other.
Jana must have studied the V formation of migrating birds that re-use wing tip vortices, putting the knowledge to good use today.
Fun day, let’s do it again.
Jerome DaoustGeneral MemberCongrats to Tim on his first-ever PG trip from Marshall to Crestline (and Pine).
It was a fun afternoon, with refreshing temperatures at altitude.
Jerome DaoustGeneral MemberNice work David. Suggestions (if you have the time and desire)…
Add launch and LZ locations, to help pilots easily know if their site is in/out of a TFR.
Automatically detect when a launch or LZ is inside or within a certain distance of a TFR border. Maybe trigger an automated Email to the corresponding club.
Jerome DaoustGeneral MemberExcellent post above by Jana !
A tire can be cut at one location, and pop later elsewhere. For immediate results, a small puncture hole is more effective.
The perpetrator may be outside our flying community, so people compensating financially may not produce the “neutralizing” effect sought in the first posting.
Regardless, I pledge $5. It is just a tire, let’s move on, I had 2 flats last week.
Jerome DaoustGeneral MemberThe TFR ID’s change often. For the Rabbit fire near Soboba, it seems to be up to the 3rd ID now. To make the confusion worse they don’t indicate quickly when an old one has been superseded if you just look up that ID. So it may be best to avoid entering an ID which can be obsolete, and instead rely on a search area. This may be challenging, thanks for trying.
The SkyVector tool is almost sufficient, only missing location markers for our flying sites, to know if it is in/out of a TFR
Jerome DaoustGeneral MemberNice tool Jonathan. The TFR is continuously evolving (and using new ID’s), now including the Soboba flight park…
Some local roads are closed as well…
Jerome DaoustGeneral MemberGetting closer, but Soboba flight park is still outside…
Jerome DaoustGeneral MemberUsing the coordinates (33º53’22″N, 117º04’15″W) provided for the center of that TFR (with a radius of 5 nautical miles) and the distance to Soboba, it puts the launches outside by a safety margin of 2 miles (1.8 nautical mile).
Still a good idea to be conscious of air traffic, and avoid heading West of launches by any significant amount.
Jerome DaoustGeneral MemberFor those waiting for updates, they can use this to easily find a TFR over a map of our area… SkyVector.
- It often follows being afraid, and we feel justified…
