Thanks all, for your input. Since it was a change in the first place, I backed it out while we get more feedback on this, so the forums are back to the way they were for at least the time being. Member directory will remain protected, as I don’t see any downside to that.

So far, the voice that wants for the forums to be public has been the loudest. I’m interested in the choice here that satisfies the most people and excludes the fewest from participating.

I would not like to go down the road of developing a complex solution of code and rules that mixes pseudonyms, real names, and privacy controls across different parts of the site, so what sounds like the answer here (and feel free to raise any objections) is:

    • Leave the member directory as-is (only users can see that)
    • Open the forum back up – those with privacy concerns should not post in a public forum

Comments welcome. This is a process and changes are easy so let’s all make it great.

Would love to get others to weigh in on this, because I’ve responded to feedback already on both sides of this issue and obviously haven’t been able to find a solution that’s not offensive. I saw this as the best middle ground as it gives privacy to everyone and still lets anyone with an account on the site (doesn’t even have to be a paid up member) to participate.

If the majority wants the forum to be 100% public and just ask that those with privacy concerns to not post, I’m happy to open it back up.

EDIT: Let’s add all the commentary for this one on the other thread here.

Privacy-concerned citizens: access controls on the forums are now on. Now, only logged-in users and members can see the majority of forum content (including the author names), so your names will be more protected. The following 3 forums have been left open for the public to see, as a service to the wider community:

If you have strong concerns about your name being put up anywhere online, do not post in those 3 forums.

EDIT: same access controls are on the member directory as well, so if all you want to do is square away your membership without making your name public, you can do that as well.

Once the slot is purchased on the site, it becomes unavailable to purchase (will show as “out of stock”). Unfortunately, there’s nothing I can do about people buying the wrong shelf other than back it out and ask them to redo. There have also been a couple of cases of people just swapping with one another (again, not something that we can do anything about on the site other than manually correct it).

For conflicts, please email info@crestlinesoaring.org with details and we’ll get it fixed.

We’re going to start putting together a poster for the LZ to make kiting procedures more clear (since it looks like a lot of pilots aren’t reading any of the site briefings – unfortunately, not much we can do about that), in addition to the diagram of both PG and HG approach patterns. Key points (needs editing to be more concise, but this is the gist):

    • If there are pilots in the air in the general vicinity, stay southwest of the PG cone (or cones, if we add more)
    • If pilots are making their downwind, base, or final approach, or otherwise getting low over AJX, ground all wings
    • If you’re a spectator and see wings up and a pilot on approach, let the kiting people know (shout, ring the bell, make some noise, etc)

Note for those renewing storage: the audit spreadsheet that’s posted IS ONLY A GUIDE if you’ve forgotten which shelf you’re on. If you know for sure that your gear is on a different shelf than what’s listed in the spreadsheet, please buy the correct shelf when you’re renewing (will save time cancelling/reassigning purchases).

    Gracias!

John – I see your order went through fine (Bin 4 – Right Front 8). Not sure what you meant by “put in the location on the renewal”, but once you buy your shelf, it makes it automatically unavailable for others to buy (that’s when it says “out of stock”).

I heard someone was going to be painting big numbers on the bins (since they are right to left), but I don’t think that’s happened yet. I did put a note about that on the Storage page since someone else didn’t know that either.

EDIT: Just added the same note about the right to left thing on both storage purchase pages too.

Added Darren’s info to the Rides page as well, for easy access.

    Thanks for your service, Darren!

Well-put, Jérôme and Ken. It definitely is club policy already that kiting should be confined to the SW corner of the LZ (completely on the PG side of the LZ), and that PGs are to be grounded when pilots are landing, but if just having a policy about that (that folks aren’t following) is inadequate, Maine we need to discuss other actions. Perhaps more cones on the PG side for a “kiting area” or more clear information on the site about those policies?

Copy that, John. We’ll talk through that to see what might work. Definitely don’t want an unusable LZ due to overcrowding.

Small request for those of you buying Associate Memberships for a family member that lives with you: would you please have your family member create an account on the site and buy their membership on their own account? This is a huge help to the club, as it gives us a very easy way to keep track of who’s who and which members are current. It also gives them their own “voice” if they want to get into some banter here in the forums.

    Much appreciated!

    Welcome back to flying, Luke!

Pretty rare that there’s a flyable day and no locals at AJX to give you a good site intro. Keep watching the weather page to look for a light SW late afternoon or early morning for smoother conditions.

The closest launch to the LZ is the 750 – it takes me with a full size paraglider and harness about 30 minutes to hike up (and I’m not in super-super shape). Check out the site briefing for the 750 here – there’s also a video on that page that shows you exactly how to hike up to it so you don’t get lost in the bushes (under “hike and fly”).

Also, make sure to read the site guidelines and pick a membership before coming out.

    Safe flying.

Minor update – one of the AirSites cameras looks like it’s been turned a little bit to the west (it used to show Marshall & Cloud; it now points towards Regionals & Devil’s Canyon). The name has been updated on that one to “Crestline (Regionals)”.
